Proper music fans will have known of ZZ Top long before the single Legs came to the attention of the Radio One Playlist Policy Perpetrators. If they were good enough for Radio Caroline and Radio Luxemburg, they were good enough to go out and by the LPs. That same playlist policy saw their early work utterly dismissed by the big national radio for rock and pop in the UK. But here at least is a small taster of the music of their roots, American southern boogie rock n roll, with a touch of the Whiskey and Mamas thrown in. That's not to say the music is actually any good, its just that every album they put out before Legs had at least a couple of decent, notable cuts on it, even if all the rest was album filler slop.
La Grange is the absolute stand out track in this collection, even in competition with the later commercial hits. And for the price it gives a good cross-sectional taste of the band. Sadly the middle of the five albums, the live one, is hugely substandard and also extremely short, in the modern day a clutch of tracks like this would simply be passed over for album inclusion until a re-issue called for "Bonus Tracks" to make people who already have the album buy it all over again. So consider this four albums and an embarrassing slop of additional live material. All this happened before ZZ became a mega stadium band and turned to Generic Chart Rock, so you get a good helping of soul in the music, even if it isn't all that good. These aren't truly consecutive album releases either which suggests a little bit of cherry picking went on with the selection - most other artists in this original albums box set edition have five consecutive releases, allowing a better appreciation of their musical evolution to be enjoyed.
If you've just come back from a forty year holiday on Mars and have never heard of ZZ, compare them to Mountain...assuming you've heard of them.
