As close to old style bulbs as it's possible to get

Since the EU ban on old style bulbs it's been a nightmare trying to find anything as good. I have found all energy saving bulbs rubbish - first lot took ages to come on, Halogen too dim. Which said Verbatim LED was a best buy, so tried that but it made my ceiling black and was a cold blue light (giving the ambience of a mortuary) and was dim. Therefore I carried on buying the old style bulbs on Amazon, but only Maxim bulbs were bright - all the other brands were too dim and blew after a few days. Some sellers on Amazon said they were selling Maxim, but they weren't. Maxim has gone bust now because of the EU ban so very difficult to get these bulbs anywhere now.

So out of desperation I tried these Philips LED bulbs, and to my amazement they're good and as close as it's possible to get to old style bulbs. They give off a warm, orange light, which is almost identical to old style bulbs. They are black at the top of the bulb, but they don't make the ceiling black like the Verbatim LED bulbs did - some light still goes onto the ceiling (although not as much as old style bulbs). I also found that the Philips LED light was actually better in some ways than old style bulbs - the Philips LED light is clearer and so it's easier and clearer to read by than old style bulbs.

I switched to LED bulbs about a year ago, and thought that it didn't matter which ones I bought... turns out I was very wrong. I have been through so many of the cheaper bulbs available on Amazon but they all eventually end up flashing, or just stopping working altogether. These have, touch wood, been the best that I have bought so far and are still going strong. Not a harsh white/blue light but a kind of of softer warm white that I used to get from my old style bulbs. They cost a little more than some of the options on amazon, but worth it in my opinion

...and goodbye to awful bulbs that were so wrong!

If anyone was searching for the “Grail bulb” more than myself (since incandescents were sent packing by the EU regulations), I have yet to meet you. No doubt, we have a lot in common. I cannot tell you how many d#%^d bulbs I bought and had to send back, exchange or bin. (See my previous review for corn cob bulbs...ugh!) If one lives in England, one must have bright cheery lighting for those long, dark winter nights. If one is an avid reader (as I am), one must also have good lighting. I was not optimistic when I got these, but the reviews looked promising. I held my breath when I put the bulb in the lamp socket. (I think there was a mental drum roll). Well, hallelujah and bring on the chorus! There was light! Bright light! Warm (not green) light! Light that turned on with the flick of switch (not two days from next Sunday)...absolutely fantastic closest-to-incandescent truebee-dobee-doo LIGHT! Absolutely over the neon lit moon with these...order these, order them now! Especially if your rooms look soupy green and you can’t read a newspaper without a torch at night. Now, I can relax and know that the winter won’t be one dark, endless night. With my quest for the perfect bulb over, and so much time on my hands, I now must take up flamenco.

PS I can’t attest for longevity or efficiency. If they blow out soon, I’ll put down my castanets and leave an edited review. For now...happy, happy! (Just look at that bright warm light on the ceiling! Hooray!)

Update from lockdown, March 25, 2020:
It’s a great bulb...the winter was warm and bright inside the house...no complaints. Spring is here and the days are getting longer. Still flamenco dancing in the light mostly to keep the neighbours entertained/horrified albeit from behind the picture window of my house. What else is there to do in lockdown? Exactly. (Love these bulbs).

Update after (Fingers Crossed) Lockdown, March 25, 2022: These gorgeous bulbs kept the house bright through these last two (dreary and miserable) years. After mastering flamenco to frighten the neighbours, I mastered midnight trumpet playing, then did competitive curling (against myself), baked 342 cakes from Mary Berry’s recipes, learned synchronised swimming in my bathtub (alone because of social distancing), practiced kissing a mirror (so I wouldn’t forget), sang all the parts from “Aida” from my rooftop with the pigeons as the chorus and can now run around my garden in five seconds flat! (I am now mastering the art of sleeping due to exhaustion from keeping very very busy for two anxiety ridden years). And all during that time, these light bulbs kept everything well illuminated and cheerful at my house. Not sure what my neighbours used in their lamps, but they seemed well lit, too (we all dealt with lockdown in our own way;)

Update: June 11, 2022
Still the best bulbs…but the price is getting to be a bit off the charts. Really? We are struggling with rising petrol prices, food prices, housing prices and everything else brought forward from this rolled-out dystopian playbook. Now we have to choose between buying food and buying decent light bulbs? Pass the tin of corn. I’m not going back to cave-dweller lighting. (It’s not good for one’s post-apocalyptic mental health). But, dear vendor, how about rethinking this rather unnecessarily steep price point? Let Britain have its good lighting at an affordable price. It’s bleak enough and gray enough on a good day, don’t you think? Do your part to keep us all in better spirits by keeping our homes bright and lowering the price.

Firstly I am massive fan of LED bulbs and Phillips bulbs in general. I have never had any issues and as a result I have a Philips LED bulb of different shapes and sizes in every room in my house. The bulbs are manufactured to an excellent standard and touch wood to date I have had no failures. Like most I'm interested to see if these bulbs will actually last 25 years.

LED bulbs have dropped massively over the years and on average now cost between £5 and £7 for household bulbs of different sizes and wattages.

The 100w bulb is very bright, I have have three in two seperate living room lights and it's like daylight in the middle of the night. Everyone that has seen them comment on how bright they are.

Overall very pleased with the bulbs.

Good Price For Recognised Brand

Bought as an Amazon offer of 2 x 6 packs for £20 which seemed like a good price for a recognisable brand. The bulbs are actually made by Signify which is the name Philips lighting changed to a few years ago and are manufactured in China. I think almost all LED bulbs must be made in China nowadays as I’ve never come across any made anywhere else. The energy rating of these bulbs is F which doesn’t sound that great but this is under the new labelling system which came in on September 2021. Under the previous labelling they’d have been A+ which sounds a great deal better. These bulbs give just over 100 lumen per watt and consume 8 watts to give equivalent lighting of a 60 watt incandescent bulb. To be A rated under the new labelling they’d have to consume around 4 watts so to my mind the potential saving to a typical domestic bill between F rated and A rated isn’t that significant . These bulbs are described as warm white (2700K ) and are ideal for the majority of domestic uses though for a home workshop / office set up I’d go for a cooler white (3500+K). I’ve frequently been disappointed with the longevity of LED bulbs, often experiencing lifetimes comparable with the old incandescent type. These bulbs are rated as 15,000 hrs / 15 years but at this price if I can get at least 2 years use from them I’ll consider them worth the money. I notice that some reviewers have experienced buzzing noises from the bulbs but of the 3 I’ve installed to date all have been completely silent.

Excellent light. Switched on immediately, the colour produced is very very similar to my halogen light and while this is only 13w it's just under as bright as the 100w it's replaced. The only thing is it's a little wider than hallogen but really not by much considering it's LED and so powerful.

After 6 months: still the best LED out there providing you don't use it in a dimmer. I bought other leds and this one doesn't flash or strobe even when recording under slow motion on my iPhone, you can see the flashing on the others (most led flights flicker but your eyes can't see it but still can cause headaches). But not this particular Philips. So smooth, it's trusted enough for my bedside lamps. Shame there is not a dimmable version of this which is so stable. I would have loved it to work with my LightwaveRF dimmers. Still searching for a dimmable bulb that does not flicker under the iPhone slow motion test.

Update: after 2 years.
Still going strong, no loss of brightness. Perfect. A brilliant buy.

Got these Dec 2021 for the bargain price of £12. They are very bright yet still warm like a incandesant bulb, and at 5.5 watts are supposed to be equivilant of 40 watts but feel more like 60 watts to me. The colour temp is perfect too, 2700 Kelvin with a Colour Rendering Index (CRI) of ‎80. So not really suitable for say the kitchen.

There are many reviews complaining about longevity. The reason for this is because the LEDs are being overdriven. So the 15,000 hour life span should be taken with a pinch of salt.

bigclivedotcom on youtube explains this in his "Inside a new Philips ultra-efficient LED lamp (with schematic)" video and his "The lamps you're not allowed to have. Exploring the Dubai lamps" video.

The dubai lamps are now being sold as the Philips ultra-efficient LED here in the UK which as bigclivedotcom explains and tearsdown, how these new ones have over twice the number of strips of LED's than these have and are underdriven, rather than overdriven like these.

But...while the new ones use less electricity by a few watts and might last as long as the promised 50,000 hours due to them being underdriven they cost a staggering £10 each, whereas these are £2 each if you wait till they are on amazon discount price, i.e. £12 for 6.

So what you'd save in electric and longevity you'd be paying five times more for one bulb compared to the cost of these. For the mean time until the new ones come down to £5 or less in a few years time, these are the best option.

They are not bright enough for a kitchen or for some for a living room but perfect for hallways, cupboards, bedrooms etc. Saying that one bulb is bright enough for my living room as I don't like it super bright. 60 watts equivilant is fine for me even though they supposed to be rated as 40 equivilant they really do feel like 60 watts +.

For ages I wanted to go over to LED bulbs because i was aware that there were significant savings to be made. I was also well and truly fed up with those dreadful so-called energy saving bulbs where you grope around in the gloom for 15 minutes while the bulb slowly achieves it's full brightness. At first I couldn't find what the equivalent wattages were. I tried a couple of cheap ones from Ebay, but they were way too harsh and not as bright as suggested. Then I saw the Philips ones advertised giving the GLS equivalents. I immediately ordered some and am very pleased with them. I would recommend these bulbs to anyone..

These Philips bulbs are everything one would hope for from the brand. The light they cast is head and shoulders above those nasty, harsh bulbs sold at the supermarket, and bought here in a multi-pack, are far, far better value. They are the equivalent to a 60W bulb with a warm light. I have them in table lamps and they remind me of the light thrown by incandescent bulbs of the past. Bright without being overpowering. Easily enough light to read by without blasting the eyes out of your head. Recommended.

There are so many cheap alternatives with such mixed (and usually fake) reviews out there but with the Philip's LED brand at least you know that high standard's are being met and when you're dealing with electricity it's always better to go with a company who has the funds available to rigorously test their bulbs and quality-control procedures before releasing millions of them with potential legal action's and recalls resulting from dangerous failures. In particular, these LED bulbs look and feel extremely well-made and if there's any problems in the future I promise to update this review.
