I am a collector of old roses and I thought this book sounded interesting given the author's other titles. It is a beautifully illustrated and produced book, but it lacks any depth. One gets little sense that the author has grown or really engaged with these plants. The descriptions felt rather unbalanced by their strong emphasis on modern Austin hybrids whilst barely touching on what I would regard as the true vintage roses. Even if you have a particular interest in Austin roses, I would recommend you request the very informative catalogue from that nursery rather then buy this book.
Great text (for a non-gardener like me): concise, readable and lightly informative. But the pics are a let down - at times so close up that it’s hard to tell it’s a rose, or too much blurring, or just ‘arty’ ie. poorly composed. But it’s the print finish that really kills it: a dull matt effect that just sucks the vibrancy out of one of nature’s finest creations. The cover shot quality is not representative of what’s inside.....and more’s the pity. Three and half stars.
