I was disappointed with the content of this book. The projects it contains are not what I am interested in painting at all e.g. a guava. Also I find the instruction in this book vary vague compared to all the other watercolour books I have purchased recently. I bought this book on the back of the volume of positive reviews it has received but in hindsight and after doing a bit of research it looks like the author has built up quite a large following on social media such as instagram so perhaps this is the reason why. I have purchased many many books on watercolour over the last few weeks and this is my least favourite.
I resorted to ordering the Kindle edition because the paperback never seemed to come into stock. I was a little worried about how well it would work as a digital book. It is great! If like me you can't wait for the paperback, go for it! I am viewing on an iPad, and the images are beautifully clear and in full colour. Now to the book itself. I am on about day 10 so have not completed the whole book, but I am loving it so far. The exercises are fun, easy to follow, and I am learning so much. It is really helping me add to my knowledge of watercolour, giving me ideas for my own work, and also helping me refine my own style according the the techniques and results I like best, and find fun to do. One of my favourite art books. Sometimes art books have so much writing, they are hard to follow. This book really does take it a day at a time in small but rewarding stages.
I've been painting and drawing on and off all my life, and have dabbled in watercolour in the past. I recently decided I would like to use them as part of my sketching kit, but was unsure how to control them (as much as you can!) and I wanted to use them more loosely than I have previously.
This book is excellent. I've done all but the final exercise and my painting has really come along. I found it a little hard sometimes painting things I've not seen before (a guava!) but I still got brilliant results. I'm much much more confident in my watercolour painting now and am so pleased I followed this book.
