I have purchased a few books on soap making and have found this one to be the most useful and suitable for me. There are clear instructions along with beautiful photographs. There is a wide variety of recipes catering from beginners to more advanced soap makers. There are photographs of how different colourants look in soap and I haven't seen this in other books. Some soaps use tallow/lard if like me, you want to avoid animal products there are substitutions suggested. I don't want to use palm oil either and there aren't any recipes with it in due to environmental concerns.
The recipes contain only natural ingredients, none contain palm oil, most use the same size mound, and all provide suggestions for substituting ingredients. The recipes range from really simple to a bit more creative. Thiswould be a brilliant guide for someone starting out with making soap; and for those with soaping experience, inspiration to try new oils and additives. I am a big fan of the Nerdy Farmwife and I had high expectations. I have not been disappointed :-) Aside from the recipes there is a wealth of information on ingredients, troubleshooting, natural colours and embellishments. I wish this book had been available when I started out...
With no experience in soap making I spent a useful while reading to understand the basics and (limited) science. Basically soap is made from Caustic Soda, water and oil. Everything else is about blending, timing, flavouring, softness, allergies and patience. This book has lots of cute ideas and I have already started branching out. Good read; each recipe makes no assumptions from a previous one (so safety procedures are repeated each time); good photos.
After reading the great reviews here and online, I bought this book to get myself started wit soap making.. This book is amazing... SO SO easy to follow and SO full of helpful tips and information .. and definitely helped me to get the courage to move onto my own recipes and ideas ... A lot of work and time has obviously gone into publishing this book .. Well done Jan and thank you sincerely for helping me and I'm sure thousands of others to learn this fascinating art ... <3
Beautifully written with very clear instructions and excellent photographs. I bought a soap-making book 20 years ago and at the time most of the ingredients and moulds were really difficult to source, so I didn't make any soaps then. However, things have now moved on and ingredients are more readily available so I'm glad that I found Jan Berry on FB, and discovered her wonderful skills. Reading this book has really fired up my enthusiasm. The recipes sound good enough to eat! I like the idea of the recipes being free of Palm Oil and also love the idea of using herbs and flowers from the garden. Better go and get started!!!!
Great book, beautifully written with idiot proof instructions and lovely photographs on every page but be warned some of these ingredients are very expensive, mainly because they are not sold in smaller quantities. However, other ingredients such as plantain and dandelions are totally free and if you leave out the essential oils the soap is still gorgeous.
