Is working as it should. Looks like they used less materials then mine for the D810/D800. I guess they need to make some money on the D850 for it's extras but the price the same as the D810. Time will tell how it holds up. If it is still working in a year I may come back an upgrade the rating. If it had cost 350 I would have given it 5 stars. Can't say how the Chinese's knock offs work in comparison. About 50-50 on complaints on them from a photo forum I belong to. Mostly electrical contacts have problems with reading battery info and batteries draining quicker then should. Only positive I hear on them is they are lighter cause made from lighter plastics so less weight then Nikons. I prefer a little more heft. Maybe in a few years I won't.
Decided after about 4 months to up the rating.
After a year I still give it 5 stars. No problems thus far.
This grip works flawlessly. The fit and controls function as an extension of the camera (D850) which is as it should be. Good packaging - simple instructions and an unremarkable install process - again - as it should be. The price is relative to the product. There are more cost effective solutions out there which may work equally as well - couldn't tell you. But if you are pondering - ponder no more. Great product from the folks that built the camera.
While there are third party "grips" made for the Nikon D850, having the unit designed by Nikon for the camera along with the Nikon warranty make this the clear choice for D850 owners who wish to add this capability. In my case, I was not so much concerned with the putting the D5 higher current battery into the grip but rather having both a battery in the camera and in the grip for extended shooting as well as having the vertical shutter release.
If you spent the money on the Camera, scrape up a few (ok several) more dollars and get this. This turns a great camera into a DREAM camera. Trust me you're gonna love it. It's pricey but worth it. Just get it.
Works well. Feels good in the hands. I use it for longer battery life and for better portrait shot control. If I’m just shooting a short session, I’ll leave it off, but for weddings and longer sessions (also for higher FPS) I’ll attach it.
