I really love this NAS.

I did some research QNAP vs Synology vs FreeNAS, 2Bay vs 4bay, etc.
I have to say that I don't regret my decision. I'm surprised with... everything! The performance of the Intel chips is REALLY GOOD, the quality build is OK, DiskStation Manager is really easy to use, the fact that you can install Docker is superb!! I can be talking about this NAS forever.

HARDWARE
I'm using this NAS with 2x"WD Red NAS" + 2*500GB Samsung 960 EVO Series con SSD caching.

SOFTWARE
I'm running Plex, DNS server, CloudStation, GitServer, VirtualMachine Server, Docker with (mariadb, transmission, youtube-dl, resilio-sync, flexget, jdownloader, nzbget, couchpotato, etc...) + time machine copies + 1 VM Ubuntu always ON + other minor apps. Everything using around 12% of CPU.

My CONS for this NAS would be:
- Default 4GB of RAM is... not enough! I bought CT8G3S186DM (check Crucial 8GB on amazon) to expand it to 12GB. Synology oficial RAM is expensive and the information about what type of RAM you can use is confusing. I'm using CT8G3S186DM and is OK.

Product was unserviceable with barely 200 hours of operations. A fault ticket was lodged as product is within warranty period.

Synology requested for an upfront USD$84 charge. No payment, no servicing.

An unfair practice where they had sold a defective product and for the consumer to bare all costs.

As always, Synology creates awesome products that just work. I purchased this unit as my primary unit, and I'm now using my older DS1813+ as my backup unit. It works really great with snapshot replication, so it now replicates all my data overnight, which is what I wanted. I'd want to write all about it's features and such, but we'd be here for a long time. So I'll just cover the main pros and cons:
PROS:
* It just works, seriously, pop in some drives, follow the web-based setup, and you're up and running.
* Synology Hybrid Raid makes things really flexible, you can mix and match drives and it will give you the most storage possible.
* Lots of applications that can be used on it, including Docker, which is super powerful, I even run a GUI-based linux using Docker so I can run an old legacy app I wrote.

CONS:
* CPU is fine for normal NAS tasks and basic file extractions and such, however, the unit is supposed to be capable of running 'multiple virtual machines', but it's so slow it's almost impossible to run even a single VM on the CPU. Luckily I'm not super reliant on this feature.
* Fans are smaller, and therefore louder than my old 1813+. Not that they are super loud, but when you're within 2 metres of the unit, they are definitely audible.

In short, yes, I'd recommend this product, just make sure you run it through a high-end surge protector if you decide to get one, the power supplies are quite sensitive to surges and it's a pain getting a replacement power supply.

Simple yet super powerful

Great device, quite simple to turn on and get going but the more you dig the more advanced and powerful features you find. Installed 2x6TB drives in mine and have used the DS218+ to replace a bunch of devices on my home network for media playing, local backups and remote/VPN access. Now using 'Drive' to sync and remotely access documents across my laptop, desktop, tablet and phone. Quite sure will keep finding more jobs for the Synology over the years to come.

The NAS was locally sourced and shipped quickly. The HDD's were sourced from OS and took over a month to be delivered. The NAS and drives aren't cheap, but we accept that true quality doesn't come cheaply. The NAS was assembled and up and running within an hour. It hasn't faltered since. Excellent build quality and useability. We should have bought one of these puppies long ago.

Had too many external Hard Drives sitting around. This was the best solution for me to do due to my data storage and also I able to access my data via ineternet from whereever I want as long as I have an interent connection.

Used as file server but also as shared storage for virtualisation software. Ideally it should be upgraded with Synology supported components, extra RAM and SSD cache. Very well supported by the manufacturer and the Internet communities which is a big selling point.

Works well, make sure you have wifi repeater for router to ensure full transfer speeds if computer is far away from router. And research other settings for computer and disk station to get full speeds.
