To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I received the DS418play and two WD RED 4TB drives ten days ago. The initial setup is very straight forward, but check the Internet for suggested ways of harding security, because not all the obvious features are on by default (two-factor authentication, DDoS protection, firewall rules, Quickconnect uses UPnP by default etc).
A few things to point out:
If you decide to use Synology's DHCP server package, the default lease time is in seconds. I've never come across that before. Minutes, hours or days, yes, but never seconds! The on screen help and documentation doesn't mention this.
Plex prevents the hard drives from going into hibernation because it constantly writes to log files. There's currently no way to stop plex from doing that. If you want your drives to go to sleep, you'll have to use schedule manager to configure stop and start times for the Plex service. For example, I have Plex starting at 6pm and stopping at 1am, so it's available during the times I watch TV, but the drives can power down during the rest of the day. Synology's own Video Station and DS Video app allow the drives to sleep, but I've not found their software to be as slick as Plex. I have a Sony XBR49X900F TV, and DS Video slightly pixilates everything I play, as if showing it at a lower resolution (I will contact Synology support about that). DS Video has the option to use third party players, and they recommend MX Player for Android/Android TV. This doesn't have the pixilization issue, but I've seen some stutter and audio sync issues with it on my TV, whereas Plex works perfectly. I will probably stay with Plex, but it would mean I would have to pay for a Plex pass for hardware transcoding and other features, when these are free with DS Video.
Although not officially supported, USB 2.0 hubs seem to work. I have an Amazon Basics hub, to which I've connected a Brother printer and Cyberpower UPS. The NAS sees them fine. I understand that USB 3.0 hubs definately don't work.
Currently set up with 4x 4TB Red Western Digital drives. Set up was a breeze with synology drivers available online. Drives are simply plug and play. Adding additional drives is easy yet takes time to set up. With 16TB, I get around 12 TB with their hybrid RAID set up. The tricky part with the Plex server was ensuring all available ports were open. Took some hours of tweaking. Don't download the Plex version available through Synology through your NAS. Get the version from the Plex website.
This NAS is quiet, cool, up for days on end. Perfect for back up. The native apps aren't bad either through Synology.
The CPU in the NAS isn't powerful enough to run 2160p or 4k rips. Lots of stuttering and pauses, but anything lower in res will run perfectly.
This piece of hardware works perfectly for what I purchased it for (Media server, files/photos backup and SVN Server). The User Interface is easy to use and intuitive. The smart RAID feature is perfect for me but may frustrate some users because of how much disk space it uses once you enter a second drive (by design).
The only thing to be aware of is that when you enter a drive into the bay, it will need to format it, so make sure if you have data on it, it's backed up somewhere else (will be prompted before format happens).
This was very difficult to setup and the phone support is terrible. It is hard to get Plex Media Server working properly on it as well. I think this product is fine for storage but I would forget about any of the apps or trying to use it as a media server.
Coming from older NASes, this was a dream machine to set up; the built in UI is fantastic, and the system is beefy enough that it just works. I'm ssh'ing into it to do some local admin and edit scripts, and using the UI scheduler to run the jobs on a clock (ie: to pull files to it from other sources, due to routing issues, rather than have those machines push in every case.) The Plex server works great on this model with transcoding, and the SMB mounts work fast. Fast USB is great for scheduled backups to other devices as well.
this is the “cadillac” of home network NAS boxes. The Synology DSM software is amazing, after trying other lower priced brands I can truly say that if you want reliability and performance get a synology and do not waste your time on the cheap ones. Of course if you want quality you have to pay more ......
