This Thunderbolt 3 Device is Absolutely Amazing, but with some Reservations about many Thunderbolt 3 Devices and their Ability to Work with Windows vs Apple. The NVMe slot is a dream for all Tech savvy users. The Glow Lighting is much more delicate than MOST of the RGB Lighting that has insulted our eyes for years.I have purchased a few TB3 Devices now and have experienced results that are both compelling and appalling with Windows Based PC'S. Finding Software/Firmware that makes these High End Devices work is at Best Obtuse. I Sent my Amazon purchased FireCuda Dock back to the Manufacturer after they could not troubleshoot it over the phone nor even remotely. They said they would replace it but suggested that MSI (my new notebook- Prestige 15 )had updated firmware for TB3.
I had already spent innumerable Hours with MSI, Seagate and Intel.I had earlier sent my Notebook back to MSI together with a smaller TB3 External NVMe SSD and they said it worked fine after resetting Windows (which I had done 3 times myself - with no positive result)
My Daughters Macbook Pro 2020 recognised this device. The New Firmware does not work. I need help right now , like the Luke's Graham Song.

The ad for the 500 gb stated "maximum sequential read and write speeds up to 5000MB/s and 4400MB/s". Not correct, write is only 2500MB/s. A Samsung Pro 500GB is 6900 5000

4.0 out of 5 stars Shingled Drives can cause problems.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 January 2022
Capacity: 8 TBStyle Name: Xbox One HubVerified Purchase
I've owned a few of these drives for a while now (One of these and two black ones). I was close to sending this one back recently as I started to get timeouts and USB disconnects. However, I did a bit of testing and found that:

- It was easy to reproduce - random read (or write) I/Os towards the end of the disk did the trick.
- It happened in Windows and Linux.
- It also happened when I tried the same tests on the other drives, which had so far caused no issues.

What I think is happening is the operations, which are longer because of the shingling process, were simply taking too long and the drive was becoming saturated. Once a timeout threshold is reached, the I/O will be retried - you will see this in the System log in Windows, or dmesg in Linux (not sure how logging is done on Macs as I don't use them, but it will be similar). Too many retries and the OS will reset the USB port and it's downhill from there.

The simple rule here is you cannot use these drives for anything remotely day-to-day. Use them to store and retrieve data long term and try not to do much more with it. In my case all I was doing was some downloads directly onto the drive (multiple parallel downloads hence random I/O). Instead do your work on better disks - either internal HDDs/SSDs or non-shingled USB drives, and then copy the data across.

Still, the price per capacity is good on these. As long as you know their limitations.

Bought to replace the primary drive of a newly purchased laptop (knowing that the fitted one would be of a cheaper spec and has now been relegated to a data drive in the same laptop). Having used Seagate for decades for mechanical drives (only one of which has failed but only after nearly twenty years of use) I bought this one based on a combination of reviews, price/capacity and prior brand experience.

So far it's doing a great job.

I originally purchased the 8tb Black backup hub for use on my media centre, and i have had no trouble with it. Second purchase i bought the 8TB XBOX Game backup hub, white. this is touted as a better unit than the standard black version.

The black standard one was about £15 cheaper than the white one, until now i have noticed the black one is more expensive? Strange.

Heres where it gets even stranger, i have shucked both the drives from these units, and guess what?

They both use exactly the same drive.

A Segate ST800DM004. So why the price difference??

I can only assume the interface is different or better on one than the other. if you are buying these for just the drives well there you go, get the cheapest.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but the noise
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 January 2018

Ok, this is quite small and great looking device which I really liked but unfortunately it also makes quite a racket every now and then. It also produces constant humming noise even it’s not being accessed. I loved the design and the huge amount of storage but the noise didn’t pass the wife test. So sad to to say that I had to return it. I got one of those usb powered seagate 4tb instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works with PS5 and PS4
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 December 2021

I bought this to go with a PS5 and specifically to copy games from a PS4 to the PS5.

I popped the drive into the PS5, let it format it for extended storage and then popped it into the PS4, which recognised the drive as extended storage and let me move games to the drive

When finished, all the games were available on the PS5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noisy!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 January 2020
Capacity: 8 TBStyle Name: Xbox One HubVerified Purchase
I have connected this hard drive to my Xbox One X and it works fine. The storage device is small and aesthetically as pleasing as a hard drive can be. My only complaint is that is very loud when it is being accessed. Compared to my old 2tb drive this is loud. The Xbox is set up to update while in standby so sometimes the hard drive will fire up even when not being played and so the hard drive can become noisy as inappropriate times.

Generally satisfied but just be aware of noise.
