To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The excerpts that this show chose for the Tony Awards show did not make a particularly good impression on me, so my expectations were not high for the cast album. With the help of a good sound system, slightly biased towards the bass, this is an awesome soundtrack. With a deft mix of songs which vary from lively to poignant and excellent use of the lyrics to tell both the story and the perspective of the different characters, the album provides more than an hour of immersion in the world of what certainly appears to be a very entertaining show. Composer Jeff Richmond, who might be most famous for being the husband of Tina Fey, the creator of the movie from which this show was drawn, certainly hit a home run with his first Broadway show. One can hope that the two of them can apply their considerable talents and develop another musical in the future. Nell Benjamin’s lyrics nicely complement the fast-paced songs. Ms Benjamin previously wrote lyrics for “Legally Blonde” and has another show from a movie, “Dave”, in development with composer Tom Kitt. Buy the music, see the show!
