Musical Heaven

This is, without shadow of a doubt, is the best DAP I have ever owned and I have owned a few over the years from Sony, Apple, Iriver and a few from the cheaper end of the market. This blows them all away, musically it is a perfect fit for me and I’ve not yet found a pair of headphones it won’t drive beautifully. Admittedly it has no wi-fi and you can’t use it as a DAC like some other models but the Bluetooth implementation is brilliant and connects easily to all my other kit and does so flawlessly. I wouldn’t say I’m an audiophile but I do like clarity in the music I listen to and this little player delivers in spades, I didn’t really realise how good lossless files could sound until I purchased this.

The player is beautifully made from aluminium and the screen is clear and quite responsive to touch. The OS is Android but a massively customised version and you can’t install other apps or sideload them. This doesn’t bother me as that’s not what I bought the Fiio for. Overall I am extremely pleased with this player and it has caused me to spend more time listening to my music than I have in a long time.

I love my music to the point where I refuse to just use anything to hear quality, I do not use a mobile phone either for music as there is no comparison to a quality stand alone player. The M7 is just superb, I was doubtful when I first looked at them, but the feel, the build and the user components' are exemplary.

I have so far played just about every genre of music on this baby and I really am hearing parts of the music I have just not heard on cheaper players, they play with the same sound quality I expect from my Bose systems. I updated the player to the 1.3 firmware and have not come across any issues at all. I would highly recommend this player to any real lover of music who spends quality time gathering the best from their tunes.

File loading is a sinch, put the sd card into your pc, open it up then just drop in your music files to the sd card,, if you use ITunes, then just find your main iTunes music folder, grab the files you want, drop them onto the sd card, put the sd card into the M7 and there you go. When you first start the M7 it will find your music and create the library. Volume is superb, quiet as you like, or blow your ears away as loud as you like. Its ease of use is wonderful.. Faultless perfection indeed.

Great little player, coming from a 6th gen iPod classic running rockbox. The build quality of fiio's products is excellent, I've since bought the usb-c dock they make to go with the M7.

Now for the niggles, the buttons on the side are too sensitive to put it in your pocket and it not randomly skip/pause tracks, which is a shame, but at least you can disable them when the screens off, although this ment I had to take the device out of my pocket to change tracks, so I ended up buying a small Bluetooth remote (satechi media remote, as fiio's own one looked cheap), which works great in the house, and on the train.

Some software annoyances, like Fiio Music, the provided app, can't display album artists, only artists, so albums with lots of collaborations fill your artist list with duplicate entries, I'm looking at you Kanye West. (I'm currently retagging 12,000 tracks to get round this).

Luckily since buying the M7, theres been a few firmware upgrades, the last of which improved Fiio Music and allows sideloading apps, so you can get round it, but I find myself always going back to the original Fiio app as it seems to work on the screen size/shape best, out of the alternative apps I've tried (vinyl, shuttle, Poweramp?).

Please bare in mind, I am a software developer, so these software issues may not annoy others as much as they do me.

Coming from rockbox, the open source music player firmware, I do miss some features I would consider basic, like being to add tracks to the current playlist on the fly, but hopefully this feature will be added in the future.

Overall I'm still really happy with the device, I have a 512gb sd card in there full of Flacs, I use it easily 8hrs a day, and the Bluetooth is a added bonus for in the car.

Also I can confirm that it even works as a USB DAC under Linux (xubuntu), no drivers needed, wonderful.

This is a great entry level device for anyone looking to get into Hi-Res portable audio, and Fiio does seem to care about feedback from customers, unlike some Chinese manufacturers.

Too many glitches on the operating system.

Firmware upgrade does not work with a Mac just goes to a web address which you can not select and with no wireless on player can only do through sd card and it does NO updating of firmware possible. Too many glitches with ui on the system. It will not display album artwork unless it's a direct download eg amazon, I tunes etc even if you attach to the file and shows on your computer. If you turn it on go into file folder select a track it then jumps back to fiio music player and you have to reselect the track before it plays. If your listening to a mix and screen goes off with saver and you wanna check where you are so you unlock and pull down the now playing and press it to open it on screen and see where you are it will then jump to where player was when you turned it on which can be a different mix and then you have to reselect what your listening to and re find your place which is very frustrating on dj mixes which can be long files. Screen is too small especially as on player only half the screen is album artwork and half taken up by play pause etc (this does not need to be half the screen). Start up is slow (like most android devices, why you need android on a dap is beyond me as it seems to detract from the use of one rather then enhance) it only sorts files if they have a number prefix eg 01 etc files like ra124 etc it will just have them in some random order even if same letter prefix eg ra124, ra125, ra126 etc. Sound quality is good battery life is decent but by far from the best unit doesn't get hot like my previous player but the user system has so many negative glitches can make using it infuriating.

Great Sound...

This seemed like the ideal solution for gathering my growing collection of FLAC and Hi Res files together in one place and I am not disappointed...

The sound is amazing with great depth and transparency...I always thought my mobile phone did an ok job of playing music but the same files through the M7 sound so much more spacious and detailed.

The FiiO drives my headphones easily and switched to LO (Line Out) and plugged into my Hi-Fi amp (with an RCA to 3.5mm jack) the sound coming from my speakers is impressive...

The cut down Android OS works well and there are Bluetooth options to explore too...

First thing to do though is to update the Firmware...the M7 doesn’t have wi-fi so all updates and transfers need to be done via your computer with a few simple steps.

You will also need a micro SD card and at just over £20 for 128GB of memory capable of storing a huge amount of music the whole package is great value and suits my needs perfectly!

Great sound quality, nice UI

I already had the Sony NW-A55L so I just copied all the music from the Walkman's card to a 128 MicroSD Card and popped it into this player. The card has slightly more than 1, 600 songs. All songs play without any problems and even display and scroll lyrics where I have uploaded song lyrics (LRC) are available.

The sound quality is fantastic. I like bass so I tweaked the Equaliser to increase the bass frequencies. You can balance the sound or tune it however you want by editing the Equalisers. If you do not want complication, it still sounds awesome with the default setting, one of the presets Pop or Rock. I used to debate buying one of these thinking I already have a very capable Smartphone that plays Hires files 24bit/ 192KHz. I am very happy I got this DAC. It blows my Smartphone out of the water. It is not just louder so I do listen mostly below half the volume but also have a richer bigger sound stage.

The lightweight Android Operating System is light. You can't install apps and that is fine with me. The stock plater works great, the search function is fast, as you type the artist or song name, it suggests matching files and it keeps that search history. It is really easy to use. When a song is playing, I just flick to the right and it displays and scrolls song lyrics left scroll back to cover art. Tap on the song and it shows song format, file size, bitrate, and a heart (tap the heart to add to favorites).

I love the volume control wheel, better than buttons. In Settings, it allows one to enable/ disable controls for when the screen is off to avoid accidentally pressing buttons. So I disabled the press and next/ back buttons. That locks the Player when the screen is off.

I have given it 4 instead of 5 even though I really like it because it froze after booting and I could not get it to work until I forced a reboot. I got the tip to force a reboot from the Fiio forums so some other people had the same problem. I have had the Sony a55 for over a year and it has never frozen so this made me worried. It has since worked flawlessly after that scare so I hope it will not glitch in that way again.

Difficult to rate

I had this for two weeks - deciding whether to return it - but I didn't.

The standard Miio music player cannot play mp3s without microgaps - which to me is unforgiveable on any mp3 player produced in the last 10 years. The work around is to force the unit into developer mode and install as an APK Foobar2000 which can.

The sound quality is pretty good - although the DSP (equalizer) distorts bass when trying to mirror (with the same earphones) what other devices deliver. I got it close enough without distortion but the bass is not as warm and deep as, for example, a Sony Walkman with Dynamic Bass DDB turned on. As I said - with the same headphones. However - the mid range and high end is exceptionally clear so I have learnt to live with it as it is good enough rather than spend £500+ on another player.

The user experience (as this is Android 7 underneath) is a bit old skool - but I can live with it as the sound quality is significanty better than a phone. It does, though, feel like a bit of a science project - especially if you compare it to a 2014 Apple Nano+ - which is much smaller with much better integrated software and ecosystem (iTunes) - albeit not sounding as good as either the Miio or the Sony Walkman EX1 (15th Anniversary Edition).

If you want a good entry level into HiRes sound - and I returned the £189 Sony NW-55L (whatever) as it's equaliser did not allow me to get the bass extension I wanted - you may happily enjoy this model. Don't expect a swish software experience though - however - it is functional and the music sounds generally great with the caveats I've stated.

Good and bad

This is a strange mix of good and bad.
Firstly the good... Sound quality is superb. Bluetooth connection rock solid. Build quality very good apart from one issue (see bad points). Screen good but again, see bad points. Battery life good.
Now the bad... database scanning takes forever, and I mean forever. Just over 80 mins to import 9896 AAC files from the inserted microSD card. The volume control wheel is horrible and to be honest totally pointless. It supposed to have a ‘click’ feeling when turned however, this sometimes worked and sometimes didn’t. The screen whilst clear is still dark, even on brightest setting.
The biggest flaw for me however was the fact that even though I had ‘gapless playback’ enabled, it still produced a split second ‘drop out’ between tracks. Because most of my music is either prog, electronic or live this was really annoying and I couldn’t live with it.
It had to go back for a refund.

iPod Classic replacement

My iPod Classic was slowly dying, I tried a Sony MP3 player but it kept crashing and had to return it to squeeze the last drops of life out of my Classic before it died. I researched players and then opted for this relativly reasonably priced unit and was not disappointed. The sound quality, build, look are all immense together with an intuitive interface. Admittedly loading the micro SD is time consuming and some artwork does not copy across but it is worth it. I've run the M7 through a Bose and Sony bluetooth speaker, Bose and Sony headphones and RHA T20i the sound quality blows Apple away, with no lag, stuttering, pops or long silences between songs. Bluetooth connection is a breeze with no drop out of signal. If all you want is to get away from your mobile, with the distraction of apps and the internet to enjoy your music collection then this is worth every penny.
