To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
The packaging was just an antistatic bag! Okay - it was part of a multipart order in a jiffy bag but I had hoped for at least a cardboard sleeve. (Amazon??! :o) Anyway - no SMART errors and a pleasing spinup count of 0. It's a little slower than its 3.5" 7500rpm cousins but I'm just teaming this up with a 500GB 'system' SSD so I'm not too bothered. In the USB caddy it's hard to see what transfer rate I can really get. It will be internal soon so I will try and get back to the review and update it. Update - internal on a SATA connection it managed about 60MB/sec continuous write for a very large file on a partition that's towards the inner part of the platter (Win10, NTFS, default settings). It peaked at 110MB but that's just on-disk cache filling up. Not brilliant but perfectly adequate. If you want higher transfer rates, pay more - this was a budget purchase and it ticks that box. There are some good bytes/pound deals amongst the 2-4TB 2.5" spinning disks this summer (2020) if you're after a backup drive.
The drive came in an OEM package, ie no documentaion/driver cd or even Manufacturers packaging. The drive was packaged in an anti-static sealed bag, with plastic end supports inside a plain brown card box with I think Polish language writing on a label, this package was then inside a well packed Amazon box.
Due to the packaging, I was a bit apprehensive that perhaps the drive was not actually brand new but having checked it out with CrystalDiskInfo, the run-time hours were very low indeed - I first installed Windows 7, then upgraded to W 10, so I expected to have some uptime and all was in line with my estimation. So my fears that the drive was not new were unfounded I am glad to report.
I chose this 'Pro' drive over the straight Seagate 500GB Barracuda because the 'Pro' spins at 7200 vs 5400 rpm of the non-Pro and is therefore slightly quicker, 160MB/s vs 140MB/s, but even more important is the 5yrs for the 'Pro' vs 2yrs warranty for the non-Pro. The drive is for use in a low power email server (fanless Gigabyte BRIX N2807 GB-BXBT-2807, 8GB RAM, W10 Pro) running 24x7 so reliability and low power are my key considerations. The drive is not silent, as in how silent an SSD would be, but you need to be less than 2 feet away in a quiet room to hear the spinning. I don't have a non-Pro equivalent to compare the Pro version to. The email server sits about 4 ft away from my desktop machine and I can't hear any noises from the email server.
The cost uplift between the Pro and non-Pro versions is about GBP 10 or about 30%. For me, GBP 10 more for increased reliability, ie 5yrs vs. 2yrs (it's not quite as simple as that, but generally a manufacturer will only offer longer warranty period if they believe that one device has a better expected life than another), is easily justified for my application, and my peace of mind.
Needed to increase the storage of my laptop, was simple to do. New layout is SSD + HDD. System os running on SSD and user data on HDD. I kept mostly all my apps on the SSD to ensure they run fast and smoothly, but transferred all games to the HDD as they take up lots of space, also moved my documents, pictures, videos, music and downloads to the HDD, in short the whole user area to the HDD. Did take some time for it to be done, at least around 12 to 13 hrs to complete transfer process as I have a lot of data, but it's still fairly quick. Its kinda annoying that different sellers sell the same item at different prices, had to pay £10 extra to get it a day earlier.
Came in a bubble wrap parcel bag inside a static bag.
Comes unformatted so if anyone doesn't know what to do, search for disk management and then find the drive. Right click it and select new simple volume and just keep clicking next, editing fields of you wish to do so. Then your drive should work.
As for the format, search the system you're using to find out what's best for your use.
I bought this hard drive as a replacement for a failed PS4 drive. Double the capacity for £40 so seemed a no brainer. Came well packaged with the warranty agreement. I saw a few reviews saying their hard drive warranty wasn't valid or only for a short period however checked mine and it is covered to May 2023. Happy with the purchase so far and will update if any issues in the future.
I bought this to replace a dead HDD in a PS4, definitely runs a lot faster than the toshiba drive that was in there before. You end up with around 930gb due to the nature of storage but it's still more than enough to store a handful of todays AAA games, for example I have GTA 5, Cold War and Modern Warfare installed and I still have more than half capacity left.
Initially i purchased a refurbished drive from eBay....big mistake Then i saw this for not a lot more, and it arrived less than 14 hours later my Mac mini was up , running and quieter than before. The drive seems almost silent and round very cool . Very happy
Did not recieve the correct item as the order stated Barracudapro MODEL ST1000LMZ49 and have recieved Barracuda MODEL ST1000LM049 The Specification appears to be similar apart from the product description. Shame I only noticed after installing otherwise this would have been returned.
