To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Warehouse sent me a used book. The spine was all creased, some pages were 'well read' and the cover was bent. That being said, I love the recipes. They are unique, well thought out and a wonderful play on some old favorites. The artwork makes my mouth water and I think Jason is a Rock Star! So many recipes I cannot wait to try.
While the fried chicken (and one or two other things) certainly sound delicious, I didn't see myself making most of these recipes on any occasion. Many of these dishes are probably best saved for the restaurant as they don't translate to particularly appealing at-home recipes.
I have so many cookbooks. I have not found a cookbook that I have a problem with until now. I just do not cook like this chef cooks. It is not my favorite cookbook purchase. I will return it. There are other people who will love it because they cook in this way.
Please take my rating with a grain of salt. Sometimes I'll select a cookbook based on curiosity and that's the case with "Buttermilk & Bourbon: New Orleans Recipes with a Modern Flair" by Jason Santos. The pictures are great and the instructions are clear and nicely laid out. It definitely is a cookbook of regional food with some twists (ex: jalapeno syrup).
That said, most of the recipes are out of my range. The ingredients are not readily available where I live (ex: heirloom tomatoes are hard to find in my area) or it just seems like the recipes need a lot of time to prepare. As I've gone through the recipes, I think there is just one recipe that I could even attempt with items in my pantry at the present moment. That would be Southern Style Potato Salad although I don't have red wine vinegar and I'd have find a substitute for red bliss potatoes.
As such, I think the cookbook is for a specific audience who has the time and access to try these recipes. It definitely is for a household who knows their way around the kitchen a lot more than I. So for myself, this cookbook is about a 3-star but that is in the sense that it doesn't quite fit for me.
