Have a dimmer switch that uses the same app, (Smart Life) so we thought this outdoor plug would work ,and we wouldn't have to add another app for controls. We purchased two of these, and only one was trouble-free. After reading the instructions over and over again , and watching numerous You Tube videos for re-setting the device, we gave up on the cranky one. Purchase a TP Link outdoor outlet instead. We have TP Link outlets all over our house. They are super easy to set up, as was the case with the new replacement outdoor outlet. Should have gone with the TP Link outdoor outlet in the first place. Their KASA app is so easy to use! I do not recommend the Teckin outlet nor any other device that used the Smart Life app.
Where to start? The good: it plugs in and delivers power.
The bad: It only supports 2.4G WiFi. Most modern routers combine 2.4 and 5 SSID’s and let the device join what it needs. With IoT devices like this you have to disable the 5G work in your router to pair. This will be a significant hurdle for many people.
The product uses a 3rd party control app. Called Smart Life. Had to set up YET ANOTHER app that would have my WiFi password. The Alexa integration doesn’t work through the API, it requires you to provide the account password to Smart Life (who doesn’t even make this plug). This was the last straw for me as I don’t know anything about the developer.
This smart plug is not so smart. You can’t set it and forget it UNLESS you load a second app to help set timers for programmed on and off. This is really a feature you want when you want your outside lights to come on and off every day at a certain time. This doesn’t allow for programming like that. You need a second app to do it. Makes it more complicated than it has to be. It does integrate well with Alexa and will work properly with the second app. I got to think there are other smart plugs out there with their own integrated programming.
Worked well for a couple of days. So I ordered a second one. After installing the second one, the first one became "offline". I had to uninstall the second one. And then I uninstalled the first one and reinstalled it because it didn't reconnect. It worked when it was within a few feet of the router and phone again. But fails to make contact at the location where it worked fine for a couple of days. Tried unplugging and restarting, but to no avail. Useless if it can't make a connection reliably. Odd that it worked well for a short time. Good idea, but fails to function.
I was so excited about this plug, but even after following the direction to the letter, I could not manage to get this to connect to my home wifi. I returned it and purchased the non wifi version of this same plug. I really wish this would have worked, it would be so much nicer than the way I have it set up now. I called Amazon customer support and they were not able to help me with this issue. I gave it 2 stars anyway, because I'm sure if it is connected to wifi, it would be wonderful!
If you do not have a device that runs on 2.4Ghz network do not bother because you will not be able to set this device up. Most phones these days run on the 5 Ghz network with no way to switch to the 2.4 Ghz network. If your phone is one of these then look elsewhere for an exterior smart plug.
Way too techy for me. Had to download two apps to get it to partially work. Worked inside. Would not connect outside, where I wanted it. Maybe it is me, but too complicated for what I wanted it to do. Nice idea to have two independent outlets, just a pain to get there, which I couldn’t reach.
I could not get this to work. Clunky UI and instruction manual which don't map well to the actual experience. Instructions state that "Our APP only supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network." Apparently our Wi-Fi is not 2.4GHz, and I could not get the app to pair the "smart" plug with our network. Was going to return but waited too long. grrr. I'm sure it may work great for those who have 2.4 GHz networks. I don't know how, or the time to figure out a work-around.
Received today. Product description indicates IP44 and waterproof. On the device in the box is a large yellow label with a caution to not use in heavy rain. I live in Seattle. Returning now, not going to even bother waiting for it to fail. Poor product description with associated product labeling.
