To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I expected the name Marantz to carry some reliability and quality. The SR5014 is the third receiver I have received defective. The last SR5015 did did not send signal to the subwoofer channel, except during the speaker test. This one worked for three days then stopped displaying to HDMI. I tried every channel and other cables, and tried reset to fsctory. I wish I could get a recommendation for another receiver in the $1k range. The next step up model Marantz us much more expensive, at $1400. Maybe I will switch to Sony.
Port 1 (Arc) output was dead on arrival, had to return receiver to Amazon. Also using output port 2, lost video several times and had to reset to factory default. Lost days trying to make receiver work.
I bought a Dennon box system (AVR-1403/483) some years ago and enjoyed it very much. A few years later I upgraded my speakers with two Polk Monitor Tower, a Polk Center, a BIC Subwoofer and two Klipsch rear speakers. It was a vast improvement but the sound was a little muddled and the stereo imaging wasn't great, so I finally decided to upgrade my AVR. I bought the Marantz SR5014 based on specs and reputation. The sound is much cleaner and the stereo imaging is also much better but I had a little higher expectation. I have a Krell system in car and it still has a cleaner sound. The set-up was very easy except for the cardboard tripod that comes with the receiver so I used my camera tripod instead.
The one big issue is the software that controls the device. The settings mysteriously change even with the setup is set to locked. I'm also having trouble getting help from Marantz.
Amazing sound. I had a Denon before this, and I though it was great until I plug this thing. Great quality and very customizable. took a star because Audissey "Automatic" set up is a joke. Takes forever to set up, and he results are confusing at best. I manually set up the sound and got way better results. Everything else works as advertised or better.
The problem with rating AV receivers is that takes a long time to actually get to know them. There are so many facets to be considered and it's always a moving target when one considers video. Depending on how much equipment you connect to a receiver your odds of exponentially complicating matters are very high. I have only had a few months with the Marantz so really not enough time to even break it in. But overall I do enjoy using it.
I am however extremely displeased that the remote is not backlit. Do the engineers not have nighttime in their country? It's very inconvenient and lost them one half star. I also have not found the remote to receiver functionality very responsive. Then there is the tiny little circle screen which can only be read with binoculars. What's that all about? That's where the other half star was lost.
Having come from a 10 year old Marantz to this I was expecting a bigger bump up in sound quality. Of course it's all about getting everything tuned properly so perhaps that will happen eventually. The on screen GUI is laid out well and user friendly so that was a major improvement. Since I did not try out other receivers I can compare the pros and cons of this one to another other than the few things I listed. But, having said that, the build quality feels good so I expect it's longevity could be like our previous one which is still kickin'.
