This book is DULL. And because it's Jamie, he messes around with The Classics when there's no need to. We just want a decent recipe and foolproof methodology. This was when his do-gooding, preaching, patronising ways started. This Penguin livery version looks good on the shelf however. One for the interior designers......
I ordered this book despite some of the reviews which said it was disappointing and only for beginners...it is not your average cookery book but has a myriad of ideas (great if you get fed up cooking the same thing!), not just for recipes, but for every use - there is even a page of ideas for when you use a sandwich toaster! It is worthwhile having - whether a beginner or not - for the recipes, but also some of the other ideas and tips. Don't be put off by the other reviews. It would be 5 stars if there were more pictures of completed recipes, but there is an abundance pictures so it isn't too much of an issue....
One of the best recipe books I've read. If you don't mind some of the bish-bosh vocabulary and you ignore Jamie's propensity to add chilli to almost everything, it's full of tasty and reliable recipes.
Really like this book, bought it second hand from amazon, but its in excellent condition. Really love the honest, nutrient rich style cooking. All the recipes are packed full of real, quality but easy to source ingredients. Its a family orientated, honest style cookbook, aimed at getting families and people into quality family cooking and dining.
Have only tried a few of the recipes so far and have enjoyed the results. The recipes are easy to follow and the meals easy to prepare. Have given five stars even though I have not had time to sample all the recipes as the ones I have sampled are very tasty. recommend this book to all budding chefs out there.
This is my top favourite cookbook. I bought this one for a friend who is marrying a farmer - perfect for home-cooked, hearty, everyday dinner recipes. I cook loads of them, and have scaled up several to cook for 100+ people for an Alpha course I cater for. If you want a great family cookbook - this is it.
I love this recipe book and I have been using it for years. It has some family classics - stews, pies, soups that I make time and time again and they are always great. Proper, no-nonsense food from when Jamie first started out.
A really good book for a novice chef.
It has withstood some pretty rough treatment and although it is a bit splashed, the binding is still good.
This is actually the second copy of this book that I've bought, this being a Christmas present for my mum. The first copy is probably my favourite cookery book and certainly Jamie's best to date. It's written in his usual easy style but focusses on family favorites like home made burgers and a Tikka Massala from scratch which has become a regular in our house. It also has really good sections on quick fixes for those post-work teas (try the paprika steak wraps, the combination shouldn't work but they are to die for!), salads and even the humble sandwich. If you were to buy just one Jamie book, I'd definitely make it this. Highly recommended.
