“What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?"

I read this as a recommendation from book reviewers 'She said, He said' and would encourage anyone with an open mind to give it a go. It's a YA novel I am encouraging my teenage kids to read it because it makes us think and question. In reading Starr's story, we are met with a young protagonist who lives her life not settling for what she is told. She questions her parents, friends, society, rules and norms as she tries to make sense of the world she inhabits. As an adult living in another country, I was completely drawn into Starr's life and experiences, joining her in the search for answers. Throughout the novel, I found myself celebrating her courage and the moments of happiness she found, while crying with her as she faced the sad truths of the society she is challenging. A must read for any YA reader, I would also recommend it to adults. Plus, it's being made into a movie - make sure you read it first!!
