I wanted this siren to work but unfortunately it died on me within 10 minutes. I managed to have it paired and hooked up to my SmartThings hub, using Kevin LaFramboise's custom device handler. The siren worked well at first ... I was playing around trying to find which siren sound I wanted for the siren, playing each sound one after the other, which is a pretty cool feature, but unfortunately, after playing about 10-12 sounds, the light on the siren stayed ON and wouldn't turn OFF anymore and the siren would no longer respond. I tried the procedure to have the siren removed from the z-wave network, no dice. I also tried the procedure to factory reset the siren, no luck there either. Looks like this device, although very rich in feature is poorly implemented and doesn't last the test of time (about 10 minutes of use) ... I will unfortunately be returning it and buying another siren with less features but which at least works ... Giving it 2 starts because of its features which are cool, but what's the use for the features if the siren isn't robust enough and doesn't work ... Too bad!
after two separate purchases of 3 of these units. Each arrived with 1 that was dead within a week of arrival and went totally . There is little recourse as there is no access to battery, no 'hard" factory reset . (which would require power i am sure..... dark = NO power or ANY response. So after enrolling and installing the others on the wall... weeks later you wonder, why does it never chime or react as I programmed it...... and i discovered another unit dead dark and useless.
You find it dead and past the return period. So far the other 4 units are alive and well and when you get a good unit, they are easy to install and configure and they work. Having tried other similar from other vendors you can do much worse, but still . 33% failure rate on two separate orders a month apart seems very high
I would avoid this product., till they issue the next version.
Have setup multiple zwave devices for my home before and this device was one of the worse. From initial setup, the siren which emits 90+db kept randomly going on and off. I tried to add and remove the device 4 times without any luck. In the end, I had to return it with the siren still going off randomly...I wonder what UPS must have been thinking when handling this return.
Once you install a custom device handler, this device works very well with SmartThings. If you don't, you won't be able to do much configuration of the sounds, strobe, etc. We set up a couple in our house and might buy a few more. We put them on the street-facing window sills so that if we activate them, they'll be visible from outside. I coupled them with a two Samsung buttons so that they can be manually set off like a panic button. You can also configure them to sound based on any other triggers you like, but have fun with false alarms if you do.
We'll probably buy a few more. My only complaint is that the black cable it comes with is unsightly and stiff, so it doesn't look that great.
I like the idea of multiple sounds for alerts, as well as supporting an internal alarm siren... however I experienced the following issues:
Requires a third party device handler. Not a difficult setup process if you’re familiar with the SmartThings IDE and have an account already established (which I am and do). Setup was perfect on first attempt, including utilizing SmartApps to sound notifications. I was impressed with the controllability and device options (using the 3rd party handler).
Real issue... unit failed to respond after 6 days of use. SmartThings reported this device as unavailable, and in fact the Siren 6 was completely off. I checked the power supply and changed outlets first... all power sources were fine, but the unit would not power up (no lights, no response from the action button, and still unavailable to SmartThings). Ok, could be a “one off”, so returning for a replacement - excellent service from Amazon... will report back when I receive the replacement and if it survives past the next return by date.
Buyer to be aware. When the device is first paired with Smartthings Hub, it is not being recognized as the Alarm (with Door Bell). You need to search on the net first to find the right DH to load to your hub, then pair the Siren 6. Quite a surprise and disappointment.
Maybe due to the limitation of the user provided DH, there are certain things cannot be controlled as I would like. For example, I was hoping to set up my contact sensors (front door, side gate, etc.) to be able to trigger different doorbell chimes. However, that is not accessible by Smartthings Hub apps. This could be due to how the DL is written. but simply defeat the main purpose of this Siren/Door bell device.
