I really wanted to like this NAS, but Asustor makes it impossible. First issue started when I set up my credentials using the iPad app and could not access the NAS using my PC. I had to contact tech support, they needed to access my NAS remotely to reset it. Tech support is in Taiwan with no USA phone number. The second issue was not being able to access my photos or videos using their apps on my NAS. Another time they had to remotely access my NAS to fix it. Then I noticed someone trying to hack into my NAS with SSH, so I shut that down and blocked several countries. After that for a few months everything was running smoothly until the last two updates to ADM the NAS' operating system. All of a sudden with me not doing anything the CPU was at 90% and my memory was running over 60 - 70%. On top of that the Backup Plan software stopped working and returns the following error: An unhandled exception occurred: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation.
I contact technical support. They remotely access my NAS, tell me not to shut it off or restart it. 1 week goes by, nothing. 2 weeks go back, I check back - they say they are working on a program. 3 weeks go by they tell me I need more memory. I ask why, there wasn't a memory problem before. All I am doing is backing up my PC and occasionally accessing my pictures on my iPad. Why do I need more memory? Nothing. Another week goes by, I submit another ticket. They tell me because I am a photographer and I have a lot of RAW images that it is taking time to process them and that is why the CPU is at 90%. No that is a garbage response. I purchased this NAS the beginning of the summer, the CPU starting running at 90% in November. So, that is not the reason.
ALL of this is happening and they still have not resolved the issue with the Backup Plan software: "An unhandled exception occured: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" - they have not mentioned this issue in the eMail responses. But they did install a backdoor software on my NAS making it easier to connect SSH connections into my NAS, without telling me that is what they did. I had to go in and shut all of that off.
Now, I know why Norton flags the MyAsustor domain as full of malware. And why browsers keep telling me that the connection to the NAS is dangerous and that I should not access that website.
If you are an expert in IT, purchase this NAS and secure the OS. However, if you are an average citizen who just wants to back up their PC and have remote access to files on your NAS, pick another company. Preferably one that has a dedicated tech support phone number in the USA.
It has been over 30 days and I have not been able to back my PC up to my NAS. I now have to search for a reliable third party software to do something the Asustor software should be doing. I regret purchasing this NAS.
Once you figure out the software and get it setup it works great. It was worth the effort and glad I upgraded the RAM to 8Gb. It was fast but the extra RAM cut and hour off the backup time. It lacks documentation, even upgrading the RAM. I had to wait to get the unit to see the RAM slot(s) so I knew what to order. It has two slots for laptop size RAM so you need two 4gb modules. ASUS wants about $100each but Amazon has them for less than $20each and they are the same as ASUS.
First off I like to say I am 100% happy for this purchase. Compared to other NASs this one you get the most bang for the buck and you get the latest features that more expensive last year model do not have. This is the only NAS that has the latest HDMI and Hardware at roughly the same price point the most 2019 models have. Don't know what all the hoopla is with Synology and qnap but the one that comes with Asus is really easy to use clean and has all the same apps that I need that come with the Synology and qnap. First thing I did with this is upgrade the memory two eight gigs. Which was easy to do. The form factor of this is pretty small easy to change out hard drives and it's not as noisy as others that I have heard.
Set up was a snap. I like the interface better than the Qnap that I have been using. However I've had one issue with their Surveillance Center app, and tech support moves at a snail's pace. It takes days between responses through their online ticketing system. And I am still no closer to using the Surveillance Center app. I hope this improves, because I truly do like the NAS, otherwise.
***EDIT*** Dropped a star. If you ever expect to get Tech Support for this product, forget it. Run far and run fast... I'll figure it out for myself. For the most part the product is great. I abhor companies that don't follow through with tech support.
