Ciao a tutti.
Firstly the positive, this is a big leap forward in quality feel over the previous models. Unit feels solid with nice switchgear and illumination.
Sadly, being a Mac user, Astro have yet to make the Astro Command Centre software for this version available yet - at the moment its Windows 10 only. Sadly this meant I couldn't adjust mic or audio settings. From the factory, the mic noise gate isn't suitable for me (too much noise reduction) and the audio lacks sparkle. Used with a set of Sennheiser PC373D (essentially Game One/PC37x) the mic and audio were significantly poorer than using a similarly priced Creative G6. I tested on a PS4 Pro.
Wanted to really like this but if you're on PS4 and in the market for a audio device like this and have your own headset/headphones - the G6 is a far better sounding option to my ears.
**Update - MAC software now released so have been able to change the Mic noise gate. Most of my thoughts still remain though - in summary, the layout of the controls, build quality etc is a great step forwards. Audio wise - neither the mic audio quality or game audio quality are in the same league as the Creative G6 - on a PS4 Pro. The Mixamp is a more convenient option though (Voice/Game Mix for example on device) so I guess it boils down to what your priority is?
I purchased the black/blue headset mostly for Xbox One without the MixAmp (the box prominently states for PS4 though, not sure why it is ‘made for PS4’).
I think the sound is great for Xbox gaming, music and movie watching. I have an issue with comfort unfortunately. The headsets hurt both of my ears and head around the ears, mainly the left side one – I can feel my ear on yeh speaker driver. It seems like the headset is very comfortable at first and it takes maybe 30 minutes or so to begin to get painful. The top of my head also aches a little with the thin padding and I have no hair at all so that does not help. It also starts to give me a headache, I think. I had considered buying the mod kit but I don’t want to pay another £45+ ish for them when I will only really want to use the ear pads and the top cushion. Anyway, the leather pads do not seem that much thicker than the stock ones. I prefer open backed design and apparently the mic is not as good as the stock one so I expect I would not use the microphone of speaker tags.
Speaking of the microphone. I think it sounds good and it’s useful that it rotates all the way around. I am not bothered it cannot be muted because I attached the headset to the Xbox stereo adaptor which makes it easier to adjust volume and mute the mic (It’s a very good ‘thing’ and if you don’t have the adaptor you should get one).
The cable is rubbery, long and removable but at the top and where the main jack is, is quite long before the cable material starts and it can interfere with clothes I am wearing if they have a high collar. I If turn my head to the left the cable kind of gets in the way because it’s so stiff. I hope that explanation is clear. It’s not too bad though and I could live with that minor issue.
The headset is simple and quick to adjust and finding the right position is easy and the ear cups move a little bit while on your head.
The volume of the headset while listening to music is slightly less loud than HyperX headsets I have tried and I can increase the volume to maximum on my Android phone, but I’d not want to listen to music that loudly. In-game sounds are loud enough and I would not want to play games at max volume as that would be too high. I tried Windows Sonic and Dolby Atmos on the Xbox and IMO Windows Sonic sounds better
I expect this headset will be returned to Amazon in the new year because of the comfort issue I have, if the pads were thicker or if there were third-party pads that would fit, I expect I would give them a go and hopefully that would mean I could continue using the headset.
I am disappointed because the headset is pretty good otherwise. Definitely one of the best I’ve tried and I’ve tried a lot!
Interesting fact, there are currently 58 ratings on Amazon and 16 of them are VINE.
I have had my previous Astro A40s for ever, well since Halo MC came out and they issued some halo themed ones. Being the old style the ear pads were wearing a bit thin so i decided to treat myself. These new TR set means that in future when the ear pads wear i can simply purchase new ones as they just clip off. The sound quality is amazing and coupled with the Xbox One X sound it really is incredible. The volume / mute / mixer that clips into the controller is very responsive for mixing game / party chat and the instant mute button is also very handy. I would purchase Astro again and again as the build quality is fantastic, apart from the ear pads on my other a40s every part of them are good as new and i expect this new set to be the same. Nice black colour and removable ear cup covers means you can paint them if you wish for extra bling. Highly recommend.
The headset looks better in person than on pictures. It's very comfy over long gaming sessions which is always a plus. The mix amp also looks well made and nice looking too. Also the added extra of being able to customise the look always a plus with mod kits (around an extra £50).
The sound quality I have gotten used to now not without a few flaws though. Sometimes the odd crackling and loss of audio. I did find myself having to mess with them for hours to get the sound right. I thought there was an issue with the sound quality to start with. I must admit I was expecting more for the money. The volume is set around half way which is more than loud enough for me they are a loud set of cans. I had a pair of razor thresher ultimate before these Astros and in all honesty the sound quality is better from the Razor headset the clarity was much better. But like most premium headsets the flaw with the Razor was with no mic monitoring none what so ever.
There are also a few issues with the Astros when first turning on the xbox they don't sync to the console on start up. An easy fix is to switch the amp from xbox to pc mode and back again. Also upon every start up you have to go into audio settings and reconfigure the settings for the headset or you just get terrible sound quality. This took some time to figure out but I got there in the end.
In short you can get a better headset for less money seems all the premium headset have flaws. A little frustrating when we pay a premium price.
I have a pair of Turtle Beach X 70s. My sound is good and as far as I was aware, the best it could be with these headphones. I have recently started game streaming and using chat link cables (to get party chat to my game stream) I heard the option of using a mixamp to save excess of wires. Then I read up more and realised it can improve the quality of my headphones. I watched reviews but until I tried it myself in my game I had no idea. The sound quality with my - cheaper than most - headphones is unreal. Totally blown away. My only issues are; I have been told my mic is cutting out now and then by my party chat members.. something I need to look into, maybe a firmware update! And i hear a buzzing noise caused from the mixamp having a power source. It seems I may need to buy a grounding loop device. But other than that, if you want to enhance your sound a lot.. then this is what you need! To add.. this was a more affordable option than other similar products.
