I really wanted to give this controller 5 stars as initially when using it for Super Mario Maker 2 and other 2d sidescrollers it was great, good weight and I love the design, however unfortunately the thumbsticks are broken, its not input lag or drift but every 20 seconds or so they will continue to move even tho you have taken your thumb off briefly, it feels like the sticks lose connection for a brief period, so unfortunate its unusable for most 3d games, very upset about this because i was initially loving the Game pad. (I have only tested it on the switch but other controllers i own do not have this problem i have also tried calibrating the thumb sticks via the switch and it causes the setting to lock up which dosent happen when calibrating official joicons)
The controller felt great when it first arrived - much much better than the previous controller I was using After just one month one of the face buttons became spongy and then, shortly after, started sticking.
The d-pad similarly has deteriorated. Again, it worked fantastically when it first arrived but it has now softened it's extremely difficult to press a cardinal direction without inadvertently triggering a diagonal.
I spoke to the 8bitdo's support and they agreed, with no fuss, to send replacement parts. These parts, delivered from China, took months to arrive. Not sure what the delay would be outside of the covid pandemic. The rubber pads can be used to DIY repair the controller by unscrewing the controller (which uses torx screws ie: star-shaped) and replacing the old pads inside with new ones.
I have spoken to others and they have had uncannily similar issues. Avoid, especially if, like me, you're trying to play kaizo-precise games.
It feels good, it looks good, it controls really really poorly. You cannot get a clean left right up or down, there is always a bit of diagonal in there. I've bought other 8bitdo controllers and never had this issue. It's not a bad one I got a replacement. It's just badly made. There are places online offering ideas to try modify it to help with this well known problem, but let me save you the effort, they don't work well. Just don't buy it and save yourself the stress
Use the wireless 8bitdo and decided to try this controller. Build quality superb, feels great and is one of the best I've used for retropie. I've tried dozens and this is definitely one of my favourites. Great price for what your getting. Can't recommend high enough. :)
Better than the original SNES pad - the shoulder buttons and the triggers took some getting used to but now I'm fine with them. Best d-pad I've ever used perhaps, even the SNES controller could feel a little mushy after awhile.
