I really wanted to love this radio, but I couldn't. It worked well for the first 12 hours but then would not connect to wifi, well to be precise, it wouldn't even pick up any wireless SSIDs, and there are at least 10 within range.
I'm an IT guy, so I know enough to get me by, and tried numerous resets, the lot. Nothing fixed it.
The radio itself was pretty good. Sound was above average, and the DAB & internet radio was great, whilst it worked.
Really disappointed as this is a premium radio at around £180. Now I have to mess about returning the item and waiting for a couple of weeks for my money back, not ideal at all.
If you get a good one then I'm sure it'll make you happy, but my experience has been really poor.
Firstly I'm a hi-fi nut, and this radio sounds absolutely amazing, pure hi-fi in miniature. Very absorbing to listen to, great definition: everything from speech through symphonic and solo piano classical music to Detroit techno; it handles them all beautifully. Simply stunning. And it looks great - mine's midnight blue - retro design without affectation. Perfect. The buts? It automatically cuts out after 10 minutes when playing phones, pads or laptops via Bluetooth or Aux In. A trawl of the Roberts website appears to blame the low output of such devices - though mine are all set to maximum output... But why don't Roberts simply set the threshold level lower in the radio, so it doesn't cut out when using these devices? That would be the logical route I think. I've done a factory reset and will see if that cures this very irritating problem. Battery life is not good. I get a couple of hours at medium volume from a full charge. Not 10 hours definitely! But these niggles apart, this is a first class product and I would definitely recommend it. Updated Feb 2020. The Bluetooth connectivity of this device is pathetic. Try swapping between Bluetooth devices. No chance. My car audio does it effortlessly, this radio? Nope. Go and switch off every Bluetooth device you own, reboot the radio, reboot the device you want to listen to. Maybe, just maybe, the radio will find the new device, Switch devices? Start again Ye gods. .So here's the verdict: it sounds great. Really great. It's connectivity issues are appalling. A great DAB/Internet radio etc. But forget Bluetooth or Aux In. What a missed opportunity to make a classic. Such a shame.
In principle, great unit. However, ever since setting it up I've had an annoying high frequency sound emanating from the speaker. Its realtively low volume but it can be heard over quite passage of music and spoken word. It seems to oscillate at times to a slightly lower tone. I've reset the unit tried or with no wifi, differing power sockets etc. Its still there...surely thisnisnt meant to happen? Perhaps it's a dud unit? Has anyone else had this problem before I send it back? Thank you.
Update, a replacement was provided my Amazon in 24 hours (thank you Amazon!). However the noise is still there, so I conclude it is just a poor engineering / production problem with this model. If you have a unit, put your ear up against the speaker during quieter moments and see if you can hear it. I'm sitting a meter away from the unit and I can still note it. Such a shame as otherwise it's a great radio that has to be played loud or that you need to sit away from.
If you are spending the additional £50 to purchase this radio because it is "certified with Alexa", you will be highly disappointed. The app that comes with it will not even set up the radio let alone link the amazon skill. Setting it up is tedious beyond belief and it fails to set up every time. The only reason I bought this radio was for it's supposed Alexa functionality. Amazon should not be advertising that this radio has the Alexa skill as it does not.
Rubbish The radio arrived and looked great. Unpacked it and played it for an hour. Following day switched it on and played it for 30 minutes. Third day I switched it on and the LCD display was vertically unreadable. Contacted Amazon support who talked me through various reset procedures which failed to help. Now waiting for Amazon to refund but that seems extremely slow!!
I’ve barely used this radio, but I regret buying it. I chose to use standard batteries, rather than go the rechargeable route and it BURNS though them! I bought this radio for the bathroom so I can listen to the news while I’m in the bath. I use it through the internet. It takes 40 secs or more to actual turn on. It’s been played for less than an hour throughout its entire life and I’m on my third set of batteries. This last set, I used only twice. I regret this purchase.
