I love this series but I question the reasons why. I really shouldn’t like it at all because the heroine makes impetuous and often stupid mistakes which in almost any other book would lead to certain disaster. Plus her inner dialogue runs all over the place and fills so much of the book that it gets repetitive really fast. Finally, so much of the plot relies on previously hewn ground like that in The Handmaid’s Tale and other dystopian fantasies that it sort of falls flat. Although we’re supposed to be horrified at certain actions — like being forced to eat the pages from a book (gasp!) or being locked in a small closet for several hours without dinner— the author never successfully creates any unique drama; it’s all rather tame. Yes, the ideas are all there for great drama but the execution is “drama light”, or Diet Drama if you like. ;) Plus there are so many plot holes that you could drive a semi truck through that it gets kind of ridiculous.
So what is it that draws me in? I think it is Kassian — beautiful, noble, tortured soul wrapped in an equally beautiful wrapper. His love for Erie sweeps me away and makes me want to believe in fairy tales again, although I am a grown ass woman!
I so wish there had been some real acknowledgment of the sexual chemistry between the two. I mean in one scene, Erie sees Kassian without a shirt on and she doesn’t even take a moment to look or even drool a little?? Come on! And don’t get me started on the fact that their big bedroom scene turned into the ultimate fade to black moment! Yes, everything about this book points to a “young teen” audience but gosh darn it, I wanted a magic moment or two. *sigh.*
So, yes, the story is rather simplistically written and told in a juvenile, censored tone. It deals with horrific issues that really aren’t shocking or scary. And it has massive plot holes. But I love it because I want to marry Kassian myself and isn’t that one of the reasons we love fantasy fairy tales in the first place?
So I absolutely love this series! It's a fun, easy read that sucks you in for a couple of hours. The reason I gave it 3 out 5 stars is because the editing is really bad. Wrong words in place, improper sentences, a lot of actions that contradicted themselve and a few repeated paragraphs. I understand one or two things wrong, especially when in kindle form, but there were a lot of mistakes in this book.
