I'm using this product as a Digital Video Recorder. I like to camp and also use my RV for hunting. So first, I like to comment a lot to my wife while watching TV. Nothing makes her more mad if she misses a punch line. Hench rewind time. Secondly, ABC World News comes on at 5:30. I'm Still hunting. Hench I record the news. I probably wouldn't bank on this as a full time DVR because there are a lot of moving parts. i.e., OTA connectivity, PC without blue screen, response time with remote somewhat slow. But for the money, it ain't bad. Multiple TVs and whole house support there are better products. If you fear technology, this may not be for you. Like my title says, I have used Hauppauge products (WINTV) a long time. Have used their products for converting VHS to digital. You could do that with this product. No you can't rip protected rights, not really well. Yep I would recommend this product.
I purchased this tuner after I was unable to get the PCI version. I have been a long time user of Plex, but for movies only. I use Tivo OTA for PVR purposes. Although the Plex software flagged the tuners as unsupported it detected and configured them with no issue. The 4 tuners present themselves as two 2 channel tuners. This is the same for the Native software. With regards to the Hauppauge software I would recommend not to even bother to install. If you do you will want to uninstall it before configuring Plex with the tuners. Be sure to go to the Hauppauge website and download and install the latest drivers for Windows. Initially I was having a lot of problems with playback to my smart TV's pixelating a lot. I was attributing it to Plex. I have both LG and Samsung smart TVs and had the same issue on both. The other issue is that the Guide is not present on the Live TV for either TV software. Very odd and annoying. It makes the live tv feature of Plex basically useless. Maybe by design. After speaking with a friend that uses Plex on Roku, he indicated he had a guide and no issues with live tv playback. I have an Amazon Fire and decided to load Plex and see how it looks. What a difference. Very nice interface. Full guide and no issues with pixilation during playback or recorded content. I think with this configuration, I could replace my TiVo system. I like it better. Plex supports Ad skipping just like Tivo. I like the Plex interface on FireTv better than Tivo. It would be nice to eliminate the $20/month charge from TiVo and We pay for Amazon Prime anyway.
Setup was a breeze and so far I'm using all four tuners for recording my local TV programming and didn't have any issues with slow downs or skipped frames in the recording. This would be a great addon for anyone looking to cut cable or satellite service
