I am a very advanced Home and Personal Chef. I try not to be overly critical in my cookbook reviews, and I have reviewed dozens of cookbooks.
While this cookbook has relatively easy-to-make recipes as well as some interesting ideas for meals, it lacks in what has become almost essential in today's cookbooks...and that is pictures of the recipe results. There are only a few pictures in the entire book.
The contents of the book and the recipes are presented in a typical fashion with the preparatory section of the book effectively dealing with pantry needs, necessary tools, and basic cookware needed to have the resources available for the included recipes. The recipes themselves are clearly written and described, but some require spices and aromatics that many home kitchens may not regularly stock in their pantries. That being said, there are a couple of recipes of interest to me that I am likely to try, especially some of the author's Southwest traditionals that reflect her background.
Narrative instructions are clear, but it would help a great deal to have had pictures of what is expected as a result of completing a particular recipe.
While the book is good, it is not one of the higher tier cookbooks among the many I have had an opportunity to review, and therefore I rate it at Three Stars with a neutral recommendation.

I can not say enough great things about this cookbook. I'm a full time working mom (18month old), pregnant with my second, two dogs, and all the other things in life. I've fallen out of meal prepping and am overwhelmed by the thought of getting dinner on the table consistently. NOT ANYMORE! Enter The 5 Ingredient Fresh and Easy Cookbook. I love how the author lays out kitchen basics, organization, and meal prepping at the beginning of the book. I used to be a meal prepper myself, but I picked up a few tidbits that I'd never thought about doing to make my life easier. Gone are the days where my child eats a gourmet meal (she typically wouldn't touch) and me eating crackers and cheese for dinner. The first recipe I tried were the sloppy joe's and they were a WHOLE family hit! I love the Granola recipe as an easy adder for yogurt or (let's be real) a fistful while I'm walking out the door and need an energy boost. Every recipe I have made has been delicious. Most importantly this cookbook has brought joy back into the kitchen for me. I feel that consistently having family meals is now achievable. They are all delicious and wholesome. I'm planning to stock up on some of these and give them as gifts to all the modern moms in my life. This cookbook is a game changer!
My expectations were too high for this book. I am an experienced cook in the home and enjoy it. I am always looking for new ways to improve the healthy meals I serve. But, this is a beginners book in every sense of the word. Or, for someone who has not cooked at home and wants to do so now. I need to stop being lured into buying the kindle .99 cents books on cooking! They are short, simple and chatty, but I find more recipes and new ideas in Pinterest. For brand new home cooks, go for it. This will get you started. Sort of.
I thought I was getting Jamie Oliver's book that goes along with his TV series, 5 ingredients Quick and Easy. Jamie's is based on a few ingredients you have in your pantry-olive oil, extra virgin olive oil, red wine vinegar, sea salt and black pepper, plus 5 other main ingredients that include herbs and special seasonings as a main ingredient. However Ms. Thigpen's states that her 5 main ingredients do not count seasoning and standard flavor enhancers or herbs. For example the Italian Grilled Cheese Panini, the ingredients are red bell peppers, garlic cloves, EVVO, mayonnaise, sourdough bread, mozzarella cheese, artichoke hearts, salt and pepper. I'm not sure what is considered a flavor enhancer or herb for this one. However, it does seem fairly easy to make and quick to cook. I would assume that mayonnaise is considered a staple? And does everyone keep garlic cloves on hand? Anyway, I'll keep the book and try a few of the recipes because for the most part they do look pretty easy. I'm just very disappointed that it is such a take off on Jamie Oliver's book. I should read the fine print more closely.
Some good recipes. However, the author is still stuck on the failed low fat diet, which is high in sugar. Fat is not the enemy. We need good fats. Sugar is the real enemy. I don't recommend this cookbook.
I’ve been watching Jamie Oliver on TV and was totally inspired by the five ingredient concept....so I was stoked to check out other chef’s take on it... not a single recipe has only five ingredients in this book. The recipes aren’t greatly awe inspiring but they are pretty basic and simple, nice tips for a newbie, I’m giving it two stars because the title is totally misleading.
First of all, I'm a single parent. So for me, meals are best if they're quick and easy. I had hoped this would fill that requirement.
But I really am not a fan of going page by page through a cookbook reading ingredients and such to try to guess what each dish is. This is literally the only cookbook I have with no photos of any of the dishes. Both my son and I like just flipping through to see anything that catches our eye.
And they apparently think everyone lives in California and keeps the same things stocked... And please, if you're going to give me a 5 ingredient recipe book, DON'T make one of the ingredients another item I have to cook from another recipe elsewhere in the book...
