To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
Decided to purchase a NAS as I wanted to get away from using external hard drives for playback of media, and to protect data loss with the ability to use RAID. QNAP stood out as good brand with a solid reputation in the storage community- the reviews that highlighted the ease of setup, software suite and reliability appealed to me, but a special offer that came up on Amazon sealed the decision for me in the end (just over £160!).
Very straightforward to install your hard drive/s and setup the machine. It took me half a day to fill all my data (c. 2TB) via the USB 3.0 input at the front which is very useful. It should be noted that any hard drive you install will need to be formatted so expect to go through a complete migration of your data when setting this up. Following this, I installed Plex Media Server which took another few hours to create a library from my media. I am using Plex with the app that is built in my Samsung Smart TV and the experience left me very impressed- very sleak and the stream works seamlessly. The unit I bought came with the basic 1GB Ram which seemed to be just about fine, but as I will rely on the NAS a lot I have decided to upgrade to 4GB. I would suggest to go for the basic one and then do the upgrade yourself as QNAP provides a manual online on how to do this work yourself (3 minute job!).
I can't judge how fast this will run on multiple streams in a bigger household, but for a one-TV/apartment household with TV, PC and NAS all on the same router/switch than this is the perfect solution. Just make sure you plan in a weekend to set this up, depending on the amount of data, as it shouldn't be rushed.
This NAS was straight forward to set up for its basic function (storage), but is quite involved to setup for more advanced functions (from the mouth of my son who has degrees in computer science). This is just an observation, not a knock on the system. With high function comes higher complexity. As stated in some reviews, the plastic case and the removable drives.on the TS-251 would not survive rough handling. This is true, but is not a drawback for me, though, as i will not be removing the drives frequently. I have had this NAS for a month now and it is working flawlessly. The little portion of the QNAP operating system that I use is informative and easy to use.
