To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
I have been using this device for more than 3 months now. Let me put down the pros & cons during these three months:
Pros: - Cheap (in price) - DSM 7 looks awesome. - Good for document backup on your private cloud - Good # of Apps to choose from (Drive, Office, VPN, etc)
Cons: - Generally, as a home user we tend to use this device as a photo/video backup device. This device is using a low end hardware, hence it is not able to perform facial recognition. - With limited hardware, it is just not good enough. - It is just sitting in one corner now, without actually even being used for cloud. - Connection to another Synology device does not work well with low end routers. I have not tried with the latest ones, but with 300 mbps router it didn't work for me. (There may be a way out, but couldn't successfully get that done even after seeing a lot of videos about it)
I bought it since I have been previously using 918+ for my office and that has a decent performance, but performance-wise I am really not satisfied with it. It was my mistake to pick a low hardware device. In all the review videos I saw that part was never clarified, hence I bought this device. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone for such a price.
This is probably quite good if you can manage to install it but as I had tremendous problems I can’t confirm how well it actually works. When I tried to install it on my MAC the actual assembly was easy and it seemed to be quite well made but the good bits ended there. When I tried to connect it all I got were error message, “server busy” and “cannot format hard drive”. I emailed customer service a week ago and I am still waiting for a reply so I phoned Amazon customer service, the operator was very difficult to understand but I think that her advice was to wait for a reply, (I’m still waiting) or return it. Eventually after much digging on Synology’s web site I finally found some information but it wasn’t much use to me. The advice to rectify the “cannot format hard drive” is to remove the hard drive from the unit and connect it directly to my MAC and then format it. This may be a simple job, connecting an internal hard drive to the exterior of a MAC but I haven’t got the faintest idea how to do it, so as I still hadn’t had a reply to my email I sent it back.
The problem with the people who write these instructions is that they assume the customer has as much knowledge as them, some probably do, but lots of people like me aren’t stupid but knowledge of computers is basic. I can use one but don’t really know, or want to know, how they actually work.
Bought this because of the drives that were in it and the price was right that I could throw the unit away at no cost if the performance was rubbish.
Performance is rubbish, tested with 2x ssds in a stripe to rule out drive issues. Original iron week drives pulled and used in a cheap 4 bay qnap which is at least 7 years old and still out performs this.
Had always wanted to try a Synology NAS but now I have, it's gathering dust on my junk shelf.
Back to looking for a replacement for my qnap then...
Wouldn’t recommend this Synology NAS at all if you’re a self-taught user. It’s incredibly non-user-friendly, all sorts of things happen that you don’t want then things you try to get to work following Synology’s instructions just don’t happen. Their support site is useless though the hardware is probably OK.
The user interface is the most complex I have ever encountered. It comes with a quick guide, which just tells you how to plug in the mains, and the ethernet cable. There is nothing else. I had to google to find out how to access the control panel. Even once there, it is the most ludicrous complicated system ever invented. I managed to upload some music, but even the built in music player cannot find the music folder! I have had to log a call with synology just to get some basic functionality working. Then I cannot get the Sonos app to connect to the NAS. Since that was the main object of buying the NAS, it seems like a complete waste of money. Maybe I will get it to work eventually - but so far I have spent about 6 hours, and cannot get the machine to do anything. However the status monitor says it is all working perfectly!! Why cant companies make things that just work - like Apple? You shouldnt need a computer science degree just to get a hard drive to serve music over a network. I would not buy one of these again.
