Let me start by saying I am no network expert. I bought this unit because it seemingly had a good rating and I was sitting here with a Seagate unit that died and no back-up. My fault, but it was only 2 years old.
Ok..so I went on YouTube and watched the videos on how to set this unit up. The videos were great. I had it up and running in no time and was a happy camper. After that though, things got a bit shaky. I have a Nvidia Shield and for the life of me, cannot get many of the viewers/players or Kodi to connect. I did get their native DSVideo app to connect right up and another player called nVideo and a lot of messing around. But anything else? Not happening. You also cannot seem to add your own folders in many cases. You are kind of stuck using their photo/video/music folders. I wanted some folders to be able to be accessed without a password, and other to use a separate password. I am having a hard time with that one also. There are 6-8 videos about all types of ways to set this up, but none of them address that issue.
Good unit. Seems to work nice, but if you are a novice, this may be a bit above your head even with the videos. I know there are a lot more options out there, so you may want to check a few of those out first. My old Seagate unit that melted down was VERY user friendly. This unit..not so much.
I use this NAS for backup and streaming media. It is wonderful. With 6GB memory (I added 4GB) it is not processor bound in any way. My backups are performing flawlessly. Video and audio streaming is working well, but in all honesty I am not streaming more than one movie at a time. The backup times are more than acceptable. The NAS management software from Synology is first class and very easy to use. I installed Seagate Ironwolf drives and I would recommend those to anyone. Great capability for my home/home office.
I purchased this NAS to replace my QNAP TS 212 that I got from a friend. The TS 212 is old now and vary slow. I picked the DS 220+ for the expandable memory. It works great no problems so far. When transferring the files from my old NAS the TS 212 was vary slow had to use an external HDD to get the files off faster and that took ans long time. When I plugged the external HDD in to the DS 220+ the transfer was fast. If I want more storage their are expansion bays that you can buy to attach to it. I am vary happy with this and would recommend to a friend. The only this I don't like is Synology's price for the ram upgrade and the lack of info about third party ram that you could use. You find cheaper ram for half the price of Synology'e ram. You need to make shore you the exact specs right. They will not help with it.
I have been running the DS218j Synology NAS for three years. Decided to upgrade to the DS220+ and larger harddrives. After migrating all my data from the DS218j to the DS220+, all seemed to be well. Then after running for a several hours, the DS220+ randomly rebooted itself. It did this three more times over the next two days. I opened a support ticket with Synology and sent them a debug log. The told me my unit had defective memory and that they would send me a new unit under warranty. The new DS220+ that they sent has been running for over a week without any random reboots. Synology products and Synology customer support are both excellent. Highly recommended.
I've been thinking of getting a NAS for years but finally pulled the trigger when my Backblaze backup service expired. This DS220+ is working out so well for me. It so easy to use and configure even for first time NAS user such as myself. I've been able to get it up and running within minutes. Now all our PCs and mobile devices at home backs up to this NAS device. I then back up this NAS using Hyper backup to Backblaze B2. So much cheaper than their backup service I used to pay. I was able to off-load the Plex server that was running on my PC as well. Now the Plex server is running on the NAS which is so much more ideal. I can't recommend this NAS highly enough.
I installed a pair of Hitachi drives and it has worked flawlessly for me. I run Linux Mint based machines and use this package called GRSYNC to backup everything I have to this NAS. It has worked great for me. Interface is a bit complicated but there are many videos on Youtube to help out.
