How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

TK Dwyer
3.0 out of 5 stars The font and background make pages hard to read

Like most reviewers, I learned about Mariko Chen through the Just One Cookbook website. When I saw there was a book I jumped in and pressed Buy without checking details. I love cookbooks and was eager to add this one to the collection. Unfortunately, this book doesn't add enough value. The actual recipes are as simple and wonderful as ever. Illustrations for every recipe, which makes it easier to look and decide what to fix.

But should you pay for the book (printed 2013)? Maybe. It's a thin book, and sometimes great things come in small packages - but the spine of the book is unmarked and solid black. It will get lost within the bookshelves. The font and layout aren't easy to read, so it doesn't have the warm joy of a written page. Bullet points become muddled into solid paragraphs. Right justification of every line and disjointed font results in words spaced out unattractively. Tiny nitpicks in editing. Overall, the craft of creating a great book was not accomplished here. I still enjoy a solid reference for dashi and tamagoyaki, the recipes are still good. The actual book design is not up-to-par.

I know it said it’s short. I still think it feels limited. It’s a good first cookbook from this author, hopefully they expand on their ideas in the future.
I’d pass on buying this and just go to her website.

Dislike the quality of the materials and the very limited recipes. I still have to go to the website to recipes for sauces, condiments, soup basis

I prefer the website, which is fantastic. I use it all the time! But the printed cookbook was below the level of quality I expected based on the website.
