Only buy this if you want a very basic description of creativity. Even then, consider that you can find cheaper (free) descriptions with supportive research on BBC Ideas. I was waiting for this book in high anticipation after Cleese’s excellent lecture on YouTube on creativity for a group of managers. This was perhaps from the 1980s or 1990s and filled with thoughtful research. I had anticipated that he would build this research into a solid dependable book - he has had a few decades since then. However, this book is largely filled with generalising, anecdotes, and vague language (lots of weasel wording that is surprising from someone with a pigging degree from Cambridge!). Very little of use - it reads like he rattled this book off in a day or two.
This book is made all the better by it's cheerful and brief nature. I teach creativity in my design school on a daily basis to people who doubt that they are capable of it. We all are - it's what makes us human beings - but some of us just need a bit more practice. I love this book because it neatly encapsulates everything that I teach my students. I love it so much that I am buying every student a copy for Christmas. Mostly so I can say - I told you so! Thank you for writing this gem of a book Mr Cleese - I recommend it to all reluctant creatives everywhere. If you think it's too short - try reading is SLOWLY and meditating on its contents - I think that's the idea.
This is little more than 30 minutes of reading and doesn't tell you anything that couldn't be picked up on any website discussing basic thinking processes. This should be a leaflet or a magazine article not a book, and should cost about a quid. The most creative aspect of this "book" is getting gullible customers to pay so much for so little by exploiting the "John Cleese" brand. You have created some great work over the years John, this is a smear on your good name.
Is this book groundbreaking.....no however it's a nice summary of the creative process that can be applied to most situations. It's quite likely that you will read it and think I knew all of that, however it has been engagingly put together, is not stuffy or pretentious and if you precis it you will come away with some key points that will help you be more creative.
They say there’s a book in everyone, although I thought, not in me. I have lots I could write about but always thought my inability to be creative in my writing meant it would never happen. This book has inspired me. I am going to encourage my teenage sons to read it too. It will definitely help in their school work. A great book.
I am extremely disappointed with this book. I love John Cleese, and I totally understand he had a disastrous divorce, he's getting old and he may well be skint. And if this gets him out of poverty then I encourage everyone to buy it. It was very cheap on Amazon. But at £9.99 elsewhere this book is not good value. It is simplistic and Mr. Cleese stated its supposed to be read in an hour. I found maybe two bits of information I found interesting. The rest... well, and I hate to say this, was just flannel. I would hate this to be my last piece of work. I am an author.
I bought this book as I think John must need the money . A sensible read simply put as an aspiring author it showed my aims were correct as regards the ogre of marketing hanging over our creative instincts. So a worthwhile purchase.
This book is very insightful about the process of creativity and a joyful experience. But it's only a primer which hopefully makes you want to research the subject more deeply. Good, but very short, read.
