Too much sacrifice of ingredients and use of convenience foods force these recipes towards mediocrity.
Why someone thought it was time well-spent developing another few-ingredient cook book is a mystery to me. There are loads of them out there: Three, four, five, six, seven, ten ingredients, some counting salt, pepper, oil, water, etc. as ingredients, some not. Some counting as a single ingredient, something that takes five other ingredients to make.... Or a lot of prep work.....
So, this one is nothing special: It uses canned foods, convenience foods, previously prepped foods. Does anyone actually buy prepared dashi for example? Is there such a thing as canned dashi? Not in my neck of the woods. I have to make my dashi from scratch.
And anyone who says that a shrimp dish--with two pounds of peeled, deveined shrimp--is a quick and easy recipe simply because it has "five" ingredients is not being straight with you. Okay, you can buy already peeled, raw shrimp, but that's not a great idea.....
So, what I see here in this book, are recipes that have mediocre taste, due to ingredients left out to force the recipe in the "five ingredient" category or due to inferior ingredients (like certain convenience foods or pre-peeled shrimp for example). Sure, it's possible to find a few good recipes here, but they are few and far between.
Don't do this to yourself, your family: Big batch cooking, pre-planning, and turning leftovers into new dishes, is a much better way to go. Don't sacrifice flavor to hit the "five-ingredient" mark.
