4.0 out of 5 starsGreat idea, terribly hard to set up
Reviewed in Australia on 13 June 2021
Arrived today and was keen to get it set up. The set up was excruciating - the paid apps were easy eg netflix, amazon prime but it refused to even recognise the free to air channels and the main reason I wanted this was to be able to watch the subscription and free to air channels through an easy to use interface. It took about 3 hours and required me to spend a lot of time looking up troubleshooting other people had done to work out why. In essence the problems were amazon thought I was in a differnet country and so initially wouldn't let me access the freeview apps at all eg abc iview, then once I worked out how to sort my country settings it still said purchase failed time after time even though these are free apps. I managed to work out it was owing to the 1 click setting not being enabled but even that didn't fix it. I ended up having to re-register my account about 5 times, did a factory reset in the end and eventually got everything working as it should but honestly it shouldn't be this hard esp as none of the instructions included suggested that anything like that needed to be done. Hopefully the ease of use makes up for the bad start.

3.0 out of 5 starsBad interface, no Kayo, not a keeper for me, but it is one of the cheaper options you'll have.
Reviewed in Australia on 5 July 2022
GOOD: Cheapest price for main tv boxes (wait for a sale), voice recognition is good, screen quality fine, Peacock works w/VPN while Google dongle will not.
BAD: Most everything else. No Kayo. Only parental controls is you have to PIN every single app or move. Painful. The interface is bad, you can only pin 6 apps to your homescreen, no app live channels like on Shield (mostly Prime videos), all sideloaded apps are in an ugly grey background with the app logo shrunken down tiny in the middle, they've broken LM so you can't attach custom launcher to Home button, no Chromecast, remote feels very cheap, did successfully remap buttons with adb commands and paid software, you can no longer use Button Mapper. They tried to remove Dev Options don't like the way the wind is blowing there. Unlike Google and Nvidia they don't include a power adapter or batteries for the remote. It's the little things. Volume controls worked fine on my TV but gave to my brother and it doesn't work on his, though his TV is probably 10 years old now. The lack of Kayo is just a huge no for me and no, it will not work sideloaded either. I couldn't even get it to work via browser. They're blocking it that way too. I guess that one is on me for not checking, though I didn't think I'd have to check.

5.0 out of 5 stars Expand your existing TV’s smart capability
Reviewed in Australia on 24 April 2021

This stick adds excellent smart TV capability to any TV, via a HDMI port. The model I purchased (HD with TV control) has a built-in universal TV remote, which worked with my 2009 Panasonic Viera TV right out of the box, no setup needed.

It is noticeably faster and more responsive than my old Amazon Fire Stick and the audio is louder and clearer on the new model.

It gives you the option on setup to import your apps and settings from your old Amazon device (if you had one linked to your amazon account, which I did), and it saved a lot of time setting it up.

It has all the popular Australian TV streaming apps, 9Now, 7+, 10 Play, ABC iview and SBS on demand. It also has Plex, Netflix, Disney, Stan, Spotify and many more.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to expand their TV’s capability.

I’m now thinking about getting the 4K Amazon Fire stick to use on my 4K Sony android TV because the built in apps are quite slow to load and sometimes crash.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for getting the most out of an old technology flat screen TV
Reviewed in Australia on 28 June 2021

Great way to add smarts to a not-so-smart TV and watch NetFlix on the big screen without using a laptop computer. Works really well and is easy to set up. It plugs into an HDMI socket which every brand of TV we have (and also my computer monitor) has. It needs power, which is supplied with a USB cable and a USB power supply that come with the Fire TV Stick, but since all our different brands of TV have a USB port we have found that the Fire TV Stick works perfectly with the supplied USB cable plugged into the USB ports in the back of the TV which are right next to the HDMI ports. The Fire TV Stick can be linked to our Amazon Echo Dots, but this can be a bit of a nuisance as the Echo Dot tries to retrieve stuff from the Fire TV Stick to play some things like Ambient Noise. These are just very minor glitches that can be ironed out. Our TV is not 4K, so I can't comment on the picture quality, and with my eyesight, if I needed higher definition I could sit closer to the TV:-) Having just bought the Fire TV Stick, I am impressed enough with it to have bought another one. As with any voice recognition, what you say and what you get often differ and the main issue is more that you have to know what commands work and what will not. Alexa is definitely useful, but don't expect 'Hey Alexa, turn on both lights in the kitchen, set the kettle to boil and for gods sake turn that damn tv down, Oh, and shut the garage door while you are at it' to work.

Cheers,

Steve:-)

4.0 out of 5 stars Hard to sign in
Reviewed in Australia on 17 June 2021

This issue was rectified by Amazon, apparently the country settings for my account were associated with amazon.com and not .com.au? This was rectified promptly after I left this review. I've left my experience here regardless: "I was hoping this device would be easy to use for family members etc. However it is extremely difficult to get past the initial sign in during the 2FA sign in process where the device prompts you to go to amazon.com.au/code, which isn't even a valid URL! I eventually managed to guess to go to amazon.com/code (for anyone else having the same trouble). Not really good enough!"

Now that I've spent some time with the device (after logging in), I'm deeply impressed with the playback ability of the device, it was able to play every codec it has advertised as well as PGS and SRT subtitles without any issues. It really is fantastic for the cost of the product, able to compete with my Nvidia Shield. You pay in turn with the advertising embedded into the software and the remote, which takes up a substantial amount of the UI.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inserting batteries
Reviewed in Australia on 2 May 2021

Remote is difficult to open to insert batteries. Best way is to find a flat & firm surface; put an unfolded towel on that surface; put remote on the towel; place and keep index finger on circle indentation on the back of the remote; slide remote cover down at the same time. All done.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bought one then went back and bought another two
Reviewed in Australia on 19 January 2022

We bought one to use with an outdoor projector. In the process of setting up the Fire TV Stick I connected it to one of our Smart TVs but upon seeing how many more options you get on the Fire TV Stick as opposed to what our tv was giving us I decided to leave the Fire Stick on that tv and buy another one for the projector. Then I realised how awesome this would be for a technophobe friend who relies on her daughter to help her access streaming services. The daughter is about to move away for university so the Fire TV Stick was the perfect option for my friend. Her daughter set up the channels for her and my friend is loving her new found independence ..and the Alexa voice option to have it find all the shows that she enjoys.
I only gave it 3 stars for volume control because when I set the two Fire TV Sticks up it said to press the volume up and down and then asked if it worked. It didn't give me the option to say that nothing had happened but instead it jumped to the next procedure. The volume up and down does nothing on either of the remotes so I might have to go back and do a complete reset.
Aside from that, everything else works fine and it has become the first remote we reach for now. I love that it has all the Australian catch up channels from free-to-air tv as I do watch them frequently, along with five of the six streaming services we pay for. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied with Firestick Tv
Reviewed in Australia on 11 January 2022
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Just set up Firestick TV Version 3 on my 7 year-old Sony TV. But contacted Amazon Tech support beforehand on Country settings, language and URLs' because some other reviewers had problems but these appear to have been fixed with version 3.
Set Up was easy and intuitive, just ensure you select Language Australia, sign in to your account at Amazon Australia otherwise you will not get free to air channels, I purchased Firestick TV from a local retailer so had to enter a code shown on TV screen during setup (at amazon.com.au/code or on the TV screen itself) to link Firestick to Amazon. Navigating the home page, selecting apps etc straightforward. At Settings, I selected to use the Firestick Remote or my TV remote (but no Alexa). My only critique is opening the battery cover on the remote is a little awkward. However, in my opinion, the Firestick TV is a quality well made product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to instal Australian free-to-air TV apps
Reviewed in Australia on 30 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
I bought this device hoping to make my old TV smart. Specifically, I want to watch Prime TV and access all the popular Australian TV streaming apps (i.e. 9Now, 7+, 10 Play, ABC iview and SBS on demand). After much difficulties and online research, I was able to install all but the 7+ app.

The issue I had was that the device thought I was in the US even though I followed the onscreen instruction (using Australian English as the language and Time Zone set to AEDT) and login with my Australian Amazon account. The Amazon Prime app was there but the Australian free-to-air TV apps but none appear in the search. The Location setting (under Preferences) had a 5 digit US zip code (where I used to live and first use Amazon Prime). I tried changing to the 4 digit Australian post code but it did not allow me to.

After many different attempts, I finally got most of the desired apps. Definitely not straight forward.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely well worth it
Reviewed in Australia on 20 April 2022

Doesn't talk to my TV (the remote) but I don't care and my TV is about 7 or so years old anyway, so that's 0 issue as I have a TV remote anyway.

This is my 2nd stick, more modern than the last. Nothing was wrong with the other, I just wanted to upgrade so I can give mum and dad mine as they have an old TV, nothing smart about that antiquated fossil, but it works on that too.

So, this one, as usual, very easy to set up. Literally no more than 10 mins Max as I restored settings as it knew I unplugged the other.

The old one was just as easy and came ready to plug in and go basically.

It has absolutely everything I need, I use way more than foxtel.

Alexa works, even with my kiwi accent.

I've bought three all up because they're SO worth it!!!!
