Ok, first up, this box set is a very beautiful package. The words and images (some from Elton’s personal archives) makes for fascinating reading while listening to each disc. I honestly didn’t know some of these stories behind the songs. Now onto the songs, the musical content if you like...
For the longtime Elton fan there is a lot of unreleased stuff here, three discs of demos actually and it’s pretty compelling stuff. However, there are three discs of previously released tracks here too, stuff that any Elton fan worth their collections will already have. These are divided up as two cd’s of “Deep Cuts” and a third disc curated by Elton to be listened to whilst reading his 2020 biography “This Is Me”. Great if you don’t have these tracks already, not so great if you do. The remaining two discs of b-sides gathers up most of the “other sides” tracks not already included with album reissues over the last three decades or so.
For this reviewer it’s a bit of a yin yang thing going on here. On the one hand it’s a stunningly presented box set with a nice chunk of unreleased demos. On the other it’s another collection of Elton archive material that promises so much but has still left heaps in the vault. I’ve knocked a star off for three discs of material most Elton fans will already own. Here’s hoping for a volume 2.
