This is not a good movie. In fact, it's actually a pretty terrible movie. But sometimes, that's just what the doctor ordered. This the kind of movie that tries to be anything but what it is: an over the top, gloriously violent homage to the B-movies of yesteryear that revels in its own amorality throughout.
Some will complain about the special effects. I would counter that they do exactly what they set out to do. Yes, some of the creature effects in this movie look like they were cobbled together on a shoestring budget, but the fact that other effects look as good as they do (and the gore effects in particular are often marvelous) indicates that the filmmakers deliberately left some of the effects the way they are specifically to preserve the film's nostalgic appearance.
Others will complain about some of the acting. Indeed, I was going to do the same when I first started watching it, but I quickly realized that there's not actually any bad acting in this movie. Instead, there is a cast of brilliant actors masterfully capturing the nuances of some of the acting we all grew up watching in midnight movies.
No, not all of the jokes hit as well as I might have liked, but overall, this is a masterful recreation of everything we know and love about the cheesy movies we grew up watching. If you didn't grow up watching those movies, you might not get it. But if you did, I think you'll find this a worthy homage.
Before I ran across some reviews of this movie 3 or 4 months ago I had never actually heard of this movie previously. Upon watching those Youtube reviews on this I felt both hooked and sold on seeing this. While those reviews both honor this movie and do it justice the movie speaks volumes for itself.
Being bored and unimpressed and in many downright annoyed with the vast majority of movies in this century this movie proved a considerable relief.
The story and plot offers the most original concept in 20 odd years. The creature designs are cuts above anything that I have seen in so long. Both the animatronic puppets and the costumes are great works of art that I think the late Jim Henson would be blown away by. The lip-syncs are also welkl done. The gore effects while not perfect still get the job done. The fight choreography is lots of fun to watch. Finally the humor is completely welcome and is very clever.
I like a little fun in my horror. This movie is really fun and has really great effects. I loved it. Don't go in thinking this is a serious horror that makes you think. No, this is pure delight. I loved this movie. It's a horror with a mix of comedy and sci fi thrown in. The characters are fun too. The little girl started out slightly annoying for me but I got over that about 10 minutes in. It's visually stunning and the kills are fantastic. Great premise. Fantastic ending. I should note that one of the reviewers here said this movie is immoral. It's not. But that review did make me want to see this movie even more. It's not immoral but it is a ton of fun
I saw the trailer and it reminded me of another 80's throwback, "Turbo Kid" and I figured I'd give it a go. At around a third of the way through the film my dislike that started brewing due to the kids, and parents started to turn to hate, but hoped it would turn around, redeem itself in the end, but for me, it didn't. In the end the only likeable character was the mass murdering monster of the title, Psycho Goreman.
I liked the monster effects, the mix of practical and CGI through the film, but that couldn't save it from the writing and characters, and making a point of the George Romero trope of "the real monster is man"(or in this case a little girl, and her enabling family) in the film was way too on the nose. There was a missed opportunity for Psycho Goreman to comment on how evil Mimi(the one controlling Psycho Goreman) was, but that wasn't explored.
All in all, there was the potential for a good movie, a classic cult film, but it was a swing and a miss.
Let me get the bad stuff out of the way first. Well, actually there is only one thing in the bad stuff category, the little girl. I really get very annoyed by the whole screaming little sister thing. She was more than annoying and no matter how you look at it, she is a bully. Now the good stuff, Owen Myre, Adam Brooks, Alexis Hancey and as PG, Matthew Ninaber (so funny). They are all so good and the story is terrific. An ancient evil alien who was buried on Earth a long time ago, gets free and well it is so different from anything else you have seen and trust me, funny as all get out.
Best Cult Movie I've seen in a long time! So funny! I love how there was a product information booklet with it. The only thing I would've liked as well would've been a fold out poster too. Definitely thinking about getting some Merchandise though.
For all of you 90’s kids, this movie will have you missing your childhood. It has the childish fun gore of the Evil Dead, the fight style and costumes of Power Rangers, and the mimic the soundtrack from the 90’s TMNT’s movie. This movie was really fun and enjoyable
While i saw so much potential in the preview the movie falls flat around well most the story line with the kids controlling the Demon and not really makeing any use of him other then a prop on their adventure. Most the jokes are in the preview anyway. It's very one sided and could have been way better.
