On Disc One: The track by Heaven 17 is NOT the 12" and there is a blip at the very start where there is supposed to be a quiet chord opening - somehow the compiler included an end note from the previous song from the album where this track has been lifted! The CD should be recalled and fixed.
42 tracks for less than a tenner. 12" mixes too, some of which I've not heard since the 1980s! They're all pretty good, though clearly with such a range there's stuff here that is not going to be liked by everyone, and I'm sure that there will be comments here as much about what isn't included as what is !
But for me Queen, Ultravox, the extended version of Yello's The Race and the epic version of the Sun Always Shine on TV are all wonderful. Anything with a touch of Trevor Horn epitomise the 80s for me and sounds marvellous - so Two Tribes, Dollar, Propaganda all score for me. The Mike Oldfield makes a pleasant surprise. The 12" version of You Spin Me Round might just make this collection worth the price alone, and I wouldn't say it was normally my kind of music.
All in all it's a nice selection. And for less than £10 a bargain.
Before this was released I read quite some criticism about this being a VERY standard collection with many (or most) tracks being available on other similar compilations. That might be true but this is indeed a "best of" consisting of the very, very best 12" of the 80's and it includes some excellent 12" not yet found elsewhere. Best of all; the audio quality is breathtakingly good ! Each and every track sounds brand new and fresh. Not sure if all tracks have been remastered but this is excellent value for money. Hey, I'm so happy with this set that I'm typing a review while singing along with my favourite tracks. Recommanded for all 80's fans. I sure would buy a follow up to this set.
The sound on all tracks are fantastic, the 12 inch mixes has never sound better not even on vinyl , Yello-The Race epic 12 inch nearly 14 minutes long is outstanding,Whitney Houston-I wanna dance with somebody, 80s dance heaven, Diana Ross- Chain Reaction is better in the 12 inch version than the 7 inch version, The Communards killer 12 inch version, Visage ,Billy Joel,Phil Oakey, Marilyn,Limahl is Top class 12 inches, hope there will be a volume 2, buy it to support, the mixing and sound impress me a lot, top class ,BUY IT for god sake.
There is nothing wrong with this compilation at all, it is just so similar to hundreds of others, which given NOWs market leading pull is disappointing. Modern Romance's High Life is new to CD for me and Radio Ga Ga has only been on Queen's 12'' Collection but other wise a good selection of 80s classics extended. The highlight is of course Nile Rodgers' radical reworking Dance Mix of The Reflex ;) Please NOW, search a bit harder, there are many people on 80s forums who will tell you what they want to be exhumed!
12May2012. ThIs report is written by a serious record collector since the punk music invasion in 1976.
A. Urgent Memo To The Marketing Dept at Sony Music HQ W.London - Far Too Many Usual Normal and Completely Boring Dull Choice of 12' versions by Premiership Division OR major groups/artists like: [Queen; Duran (Squared); FGTH; Bananarama; A-ha; Spandau Ballet; ... other 80s superstars] which are already out on CD on other packages on recent CD albums usually as bonus tracks on top selling album reissues.
B. Urgent Memo To The Marketing Dept at Sony Music HQ W.London - there is NOT NEARLY ENOUGH: 1.Impossible-to-find OR 2.rare OR 3.hard-to-source OR 4.obscure OR 5.one-hit-wonder OR 6.etc :- 12" mixes; 12" remixes; 12" dubs; 12" dance mixes; 12" extended mixes; 12" alt mixes; 12" foreign language vers; Long versions; LP versions; Club mixes.... by (for example):-
eg Will Powers "Kissing with confidence" (English language extd mix; AND GERMAN LANGUAGE extd mix); eg Laurie Anderson "Oh, Superman"; eg H2O "Dream to sleep"; => plus 4 other 7" singles as well on 12" vinyls. eg Alexei Sayle "Ullo John gotta a new motor" (part 3) 9m Extended mix; eg Alexei Sayle "Ullo John gotta a new motor" (part 4) 5m Profanity Ridden Ultra remix; eg The Shadows "Dancing in the dark"; eg Propaganda "Duel" 2nd version; eg Olivia Newton John - ANY 12" mixes from 80s; eg John Forde "Stardance"; eg John Forde "Woman"; eg The Smiths "This charming man" extd mix AND the very rare "NY mix" eg ZZtop "Stages" eg Ryan Paris "Dolce vita". eg
Final thought: what is actually needed is a very large book of all UK released 12" singles from 70s/80s/90s decades (including Madonna Cicone & Cliff Richard) with all useful info for record collectors eg final chart position; number of weeks; labels; catalogue numbers (etc) since The Virgin Book of UK Hit Singles (volume 2) is only fit for 7" 45rpm singles OR CD singles with no distinction between 7" or 12" singles info.
Just received this afternoon, listened to each songs very quickly. Pretty much as you expected in any 12"80s compilation CD. There are a lot of repeats from other compilations. However, I don't recall I saw many has Marilyn - Calling your name , or Mike Oldfield - Moonlight Shadow. I bought just about all 12" 80s complication and this is just add to my collection.
It is good to have all the old favourites in one package - Diana Ross, Billy Joel, Queen. Any Shep Pettibone 12" Mix is always welcome. Would the record company please have the next series which has more oddity or less well known hits with harder to find remix which can't easily be found in other compilation.
I was a mobile DJ in the 80s and the 12" mixes were my saviours when I needed to "visit the bathroom". There is so much good music on here and as others have said the sound quality is amazing. I cannot see anything about them being remixed but clearly they have been enhanced in some way. I have been playing it in the car - loud!! I have had some odd looks when stopped at traffic lights especially when "Blue Monday" or "You Spin Me Round" are playing probably because I play them extra loud as they deserve. So many classics and some versions I don't think I had heard before even as a DJ. Highly recommended! And "mine is the last voice you will ever hear!" Brilliant.
