When most of a village has been excitedly hired as extras in a new television production it's all anyone can talk about. For local obituary writer, Eve Mallow and best friend, Viv it's also a chance to show the world just how good the food at Monty's tearoom is as they provide cakes and snacks for the cast and crew.
When local gossip Moira announces how she’s just seen the director in a compromising position he brushes it aside but when his body is discovered not long afterwards it changes everything. Asked to write the obituary Eve finds herself in the middle of things once again and can't help but investigate at the same time. With rivalries and long held grievances simmering just beneath the surface Eve knows she has to keep alert to to the danger surrounding her.
This is the sixth book in a wonderful series and I love reconnecting with all the regular characters living in Saxford St Peter. Moira is the chatty shopkeeper who adds a touch of levity to the proceedings and once again she is pushing her nose in where it isn't wanted which I very much enjoyed. Eve's little dog is another favourite and he also took a starring role.
I think I have an idea of where Eve's storyline will gradually go but I definitely hope there will be a few more outings for her before that happens. As usual I didn't work things out before Eve but I'm pretty sure I fell for most of the red herrings I was supposed to.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my. I love this series and this is a worthy addition.
Please, please, please can Clare and other authors of so called cosy mysteries find another way of letting us know 'who done it'? I really am now getting quite tired of the solver of these murders getting into trouble as the way of showing us how clever they are. I mean, if they were that clever they wouldn't get into these situations each and every time. Other than that the story is actually quite good.
Eve and Gus get to join in as extras for a television series being filmed locally. When one of the crew is found dead in the on-site church it appears death by natural causes. But when it is found to be murder and Even e is hired to write the man's obit, the bodies begin to pile up. With her nemesis heading the investigation Eve must stay out of his way but gather the clues to help solve the mystery. I've read all the Eve Mallow mysteries and this is one of my favorites!
Eve Mallow volunteers as an extra on a film being made near her home. She becomes involved in their lives, Rufus is murdered, and Eve starts investigating upon her acceptance from a magazine to write his obituary. This is an interesting and enjoyable cozy mystery. I love the characters. Highly recommend.
Characters well crafted, plotting solidly constructed. Could have used a little more of personal connections between the characters that much more established in previous books. But I will definitely get the next one.
