MLT has penned a good resume of American history as it relates to racism, primarily. A “Reckoning “! Whilst there are appropriate statements regarding her uncle’s curious, and often mind-blowing manner and issues, the book is not one joining the queue of the many recent editions lambasting DJT. Somewhat psychological and psychiatric academically q, especially in the latter one third, it is still a worthwhile read for those who wish to more clearly understand the past 150+ year period as it relates to the various races of indigenous Americans, slave Americans, Latin Americans and Anglo-Saxon Americans. Well done MLT.
Mary Trump’s new book, “The Reckoning” is less about her uncle and his misdeeds and more about how our nation suffered through his four year administration. She calls it a form of PTSD (and she has felt it herself). In fact the subtitle of the book gets right to the book’s point. It is “Our Nation’s Trauma and Finding a Way to Heal”.
Donald Trump and his administration have been examined by reporters, government officials, and others and all have contributed to the understanding of Trump. I’ve read many of them - can you think of a better way to spend a summer’s day? - and collected the facts. But Mary Trump, who tried to explain her uncle from a psychologist view, returns to help those traumatized by his four years in office. She also looks at our country’s history and pinpoint several times that have been just as bad.
But CAN we use the term traumatized to describe our country or are we all drama queens? Mary Trump thinks we can, and I agree. She suggests ways to recognize and identify the problems the Trump administration has left us. And perhaps work together to recover ourselves.
But don’t buy this book expecting the usual litany of Donald Trump’s sins and failures. Mary Trump has really written an American history.
This book should be required reading for anyone concerned about the future of American Democracy. Dr. Trump does a superb task of reviewing the history and politics that have brought us to the current situation. The following is a paragraph from this brilliant text that outlines what needs to be conveyed to Trump supporters. If you are white in America and feel you have been left behind and shut out of the prosperity afforded to others, it's not because of Black people and immigrants. It's because the politicians you continue to vote for stoke your bigotry and sense of grievances while exploiting your ignorance in order to keep you exactly where you are Disempowered, angry, and fearful.
Book is very informative, easy to read. It makes the reader question many of the decisions of yesteryear as they helped to shape what is happening in the United States now. Each individual should learn the history of their country and not just some of it. Everyone has a responsibility to learn the entire truth about their country from all points of view. Then they can best make up their mind as to what they believe. Common sense, honesty, truthfulness is needed by all.
It has very little to do with the former, twice impeached President and 95% of it is about the indigenous and black cultures and slavery. It was good because it pointed out a lot of the revisionist history in the USA but it addressed very little concerning her uncle. Sort of like reading a history book but with new historical information compared to the « traditional » ones.
My words cannot express the impact this book had on me and will have on anybody who reads it. Mary Trump' s " The Reckoning is well researched and written with a no holds barred approach. The facts, historical and contemporary are devastatingly clear. Whether you agree with the opinions expressed or not, this book is a stunning must read!
Her 1st book about Uncle Connie Donnie was AWESOME! Really let u see into the life that made this incredible LIAR and EGOMANIAC. This book speaks VOLUMES to what many of us NORMAL folks stuck in the middle SUFFERED for 4 of the WORST years in ANY USA Presidency in YEARS! She is one honest smart cookie. Great book Mary and thank you again for your insight and honesty.
I have seen the divide between Black African Americans on tv but being from Canada never understood what was happening in the past. But chapter 8 to end Mary really brings the discussion to real scene. I now believe some White Americans want history erased as they are ashamed of their family past to the slave era.
